As a nostalgic gamer who grew up playing Lineage 2, my heart skipped a beat when I heard about Throne and Liberty. Having fond memories of grinding in Solisium with friends, I was eager to revisit that world in a modern context. Unfortunately, as someone who still prefers the comfort of my PlayStation 4 controller over a keyboard and mouse, I was disappointed to find out that Throne and Liberty won’t be coming to my beloved console anytime soon.
As a gamer who grew up in the golden age of MMORPGs, I can’t forget about Lineage 2. If it still holds a special place in your heart and you’re looking for something more modern, why not give Throne and Liberty a try? This free-to-play game, developed by NCsoft (the same studio behind Lineage 2), is becoming increasingly popular on Steam (according to SteamDB). But what about other platforms like PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch? If it were available on these consoles, I believe it would attract even more fans and make the world of Solisium even more populated. So, let’s find out if we can enjoy this game on older platforms as well!
Throne and Liberty Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One release explained
While we’d love for gaming platforms such as Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One to last forever, it’s just not feasible given the pace of technological progress. These systems have their constraints and can’t be updated like a PC. Although Throne and Liberty doesn’t demand much in terms of system requirements, developers still face limitations during development. It appears that this might be the reason why the NCsoft studio has announced plans to work exclusively with current-gen devices, specifically the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Coordinating multiple systems with different architectures can pose a challenge, particularly for the Nintendo Switch, which is rumored to be succeeded soon by its next version. However, it’s important to note that the Switch isn’t obsolete yet; it still hosts well-crafted games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown that run smoothly.
Although it’s not very likely that Throne and Liberty will appear on Nintendo Switch, another portable device like the Steam Deck could be a viable option for playing this MMORPG off-screen. While the game’s support status on its Steam page is currently listed as “Unknown”, information from protondb suggests it may indeed be playable there.
It appears that the developers’ choice to focus solely on current-generation devices aligns logically, as creating games for various platforms, including older ones, can escalate development expenses and introduce additional complications and constraints. For instance, a well-known game like Grand Theft Auto Online, initially developed for PS4 and Xbox One, eventually phased out certain features on those consoles due to such reasons.
