As a gamer with a soft spot for nostalgic TV shows, I can’t help but reminisce about the golden era of Modern Family and the unforgettable duo that was Gloria and Jay, played by none other than Sofia Vergara and Ed O’Neill. Initially, I too had my doubts when I heard they were to be married on screen, mainly because I imagined long, tedious days stuck with an “old guy” on set. Boy, was I wrong!
The comedy series “Modern Family” became incredibly popular by chronicling the escapades of three unique families intertwined by relationship. One such family was the Pritchett clan, featuring a couple with a significant age difference, portrayed by Sofia Vergara and Ed O’Neill.
When Vergara became part of the Modern Family cast and learned who would portray her husband, she felt uncertain and had numerous worries about how her time on set would unfold. In essence, the actress wasn’t confident in the idea since it seemed to her that it would result in boredom for her. She revealed this anecdote during her appearance as a guest on the Hart to Heart podcast.
In Colombia, I used to watch Ed O’Neill on TV, and when I found out I was going to marry him – he being nearly two decades my senior – I was taken aback, exclaiming something like “Oh my God!” However, contrary to my initial expectations, the experience turned out to be far from dull. Instead of finding long hours spent with him on set tedious, I found it anything but!
As a die-hard fan, I must share that despite my initial reservations, working alongside Ed O’Neill on the TV show was an absolute blast! In fact, I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of it. On Ellen’s show, I even confessed that I truly cherish going to work with him each day. This just goes to show how different my experience on the set of Modern Family turned out to be compared to what I had initially expected.
The harmony they shared off-screen translated beautifully into their portrayal as a couple in “Modern Family.” Many fans of the sitcom adored the dynamic between Gloria and Jay.
