An actor who worked with Robert Downey Jr. on Avengers: Doomsday hinted at some interesting details regarding his role as Doctor Doom.
Okay, so as a huge Marvel fan, it’s still wild to think about how Robert Downey Jr. basically started the MCU with Iron Man way back in 2008. It was so emotional seeing his time as Tony Stark end in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. But now? He’s coming back! Apparently, he’s going to be playing Doom, the big bad guy in the new Doomsday movie, and it’s happening pretty soon. We haven’t seen much of his performance yet, but Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who’s in the movie too, has said it’s amazing to watch him become this iconic Marvel villain.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, actor Toby Moss-Bachrach described working in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as being around a lot of talented actors in unusual costumes, comparing the experience to a costume party. He said he was particularly surprised by his castmates while filming Avengers: Doomsday. Moss-Bachrach is returning to play Benjamin Grimm, also known as The Thing, after first appearing in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
You know, watching Downey perform is always a treat. He’s just so unexpected and playful, with this mischievous energy that really draws you in. I honestly find him fascinating – he’s one of those actors who keeps you guessing, and it’s a really good thing! He’s just wonderfully unpredictable in his roles.
Doctor Doom has been played by actors in live-action films before. Julian McMahon portrayed him in the Fantastic Four movies released in the 2000s, and Toby Kebbell took on the role in the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot. While Robert Downey Jr. made a brief, silent appearance as Doom in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, his face wasn’t revealed.
Until the official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday arrives—likely after the initial previews released at the end of 2025—fans are looking to interviews with actors like Moss-Bachrach and Robert Downey Jr.’s colleagues for clues about his portrayal of Victor von Doom.
The next Avengers movie was initially planned to be titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. It would have featured different versions of Kang the Conqueror, played by Jonathan Majors, as the main villains. Viewers had already seen hints of these alternate Kangs in the shows Loki and the film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
After Jonathan Majors faced legal issues, Marvel Studios planned to change the upcoming film from The Kang Dynasty to Avengers: Doomsday. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated they were already considering replacing Kang with Doctor Doom before the release of the third Ant-Man movie.
Despite being known as the Fantastic Four’s greatest foe, Doctor Doom didn’t appear in the main storyline of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Instead, the creators chose to have the team battle Galactus and the Silver Surfer.
Okay, so about that Doctor Doom cameo everyone was hoping for… it turns out it did happen, but it was super brief! It was just a quick scene at the very end, showing Doom appearing to young Franklin Richards four years after the main events. Apparently, he was just standing there, holding his mask as Franklin reached for him. Vanessa Kirby actually confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. was the one playing Doom in that little moment, and it was filmed while they were still making Avengers: Doomsday. It wasn’t a big scene, but it was definitely him!
We don’t yet know exactly what Doctor Doom is planning in Avengers: Doomsday, but it seems he’ll be a threat to the entire multiverse. The film comes out December 18th, on the same day as Dune: Part Three. Doom’s plans and the overarching Multiverse Saga will conclude with Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
