As a seasoned movie enthusiast with a penchant for uncovering hidden gems and the heart to appreciate groundbreaking cinema, I find myself utterly captivated by the news of Daniel Kaluuya being immortalized in his home city of London. Having watched Kaluuya’s transformative journey on the silver screen, from “Get Out” to “Black Panther,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” and most recently “Nope,” I can confidently assert that this statue is not just a tribute to an exceptional actor but also a symbol of modern cinematic triumph.
Daniel Kaluuya is set to receive a statute in his native city, London, acknowledging his remarkable performance in the 2017 blockbuster “Get Out,” which catapulted him to stardom.
The Oscar-winning star, now considered one of the U.K.’s finest on-screen talents, was chosen from a poll of 5,000 British film fans as the actor people would most like to see as part of the “Scenes in the Square” trail in Leicester Square, landing one fifth of the vote. His statue — depicting the famed ‘Sunken Place’ scene in “Get Out” in which Kaluuya’s character falls into a hypnosis-induced suppressed metaphysical abyss — will be unveiled in October.
Daniel Kaluuya is set to be part of a diverse group of statues that have been placed along a path honoring a century of cinema. This lineup includes characters like Harry Potter, Batman, Wonder Woman, Mary Poppins, and Gene Kelly. These figures were installed four years ago and since then, additions such as the “Game of Thrones” throne, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and temporarily placed statues of Indiana Jones have been added to the Square. It is said that Kaluuya’s statue will symbolize contemporary cinematic achievement and local talent.
Mark Williams, deputy chief executive of Heart of London Business Alliance (the organizers of ‘Scenes in the Square’), expressed enthusiasm over the addition of ‘Get Out’, starring Daniel Kaluuya and produced by Jordan Peele, to our line-up. He views this as a commemoration of contemporary film successes and British acting talent. With Kaluuya representing the future of entertainment, it’s an exciting sign for our trail. It’s a pleasure to highlight such a groundbreaking movie.
Beyond giving a significant career boost to Daniel Kaluuya, who later starred in “Black Panther,” “Judas and the Black Messiah” (winning an Oscar for his supporting role), and “Nope,” the movie “Get Out” propelled Jordan Peele into the elite league of top-tier filmmakers. On a budget under $5 million, this film broke multiple box office records, raking in over $250 million globally, making it the highest-grossing debut film based on an original script in Hollywood history. It also received four Oscar nominations, including best picture, actor (Kaluuya) and directing (Peele), eventually winning Peele the Academy Award for original screenplay.
As planned by the event organizers, the reveal of the “Get Out” statue featuring Kaluuya is scheduled for Halloween and the U.K.’s Black History Month. This timing aligns with both the horror movie genre of the film and its portrayal of the culture and experiences of African Americans.
