I’ve just learned that I’m thrilled to announce my acquisition of “Pavements,” Alex Ross Perry’s unconventional blend of documentary, music, and biopic about the ’90s cult band Pavement. This exciting piece has been acquired for various territories following its recent world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. I can’t wait to share this unique production with more audiences!
The art-focused distributor, streaming service, and production company has obtained all the rights to the movie, which is set to premiere at both the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. For the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, France, and Canada, they will handle distribution. In addition, Mubi secured exclusive streaming rights for the U.S.
The agreement was made with Utopia, who are responsible for global distribution. Following the film’s premiere at Venice, Utopia declared they would also show the movie in US cinemas. Mubi intends to unveil its release strategy within the upcoming months.
The film “Pavements,” overseen and penned by Perry (“Her Smell”), features an ensemble cast that includes Joe Keery, Jason Schwartzman, Nat Wolff, Fred Hechinger, Logan Miller, Griffin Newman, Tim Heidecker, Michael Esper, Zoe Lister-Jones, Kathryn Gallagher, alongside the members of the band Pavement: Stephen Malkmus, Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, Mark Ibold, Steve West, and Bob Nastanovich. These latter individuals portray themselves in the movie.
The film titled “Pavements” might not accurately portray all events, may not fully reflect genuine feelings, and could potentially focus more on the concept of a band, in general, rather than a precise account of the brief, intensely adored, yet commercially underappreciated ’90s American alternative group Pavement.
This movie, described in the summary as an “unusual film about an unusually unique band,” blends elements such as a stage musical, a rock biography, art exhibitions, historical footage, and current documentary-style footage. The result is a film that mirrors the band’s uniqueness, unpredictability, and appeal. It has been edited by Robert Greene, a pioneer in nonfiction filmmaking (Procession).
The piece titled “Pavements” was created by a team that includes Perry, Greene, Peter Kline, Danny Gabai, Craig Butta, Lance Bangs, Alex Needles, Arrow Kruse, Chris Lombardi, Gerard Cosloy, Patrick Amory, and Gabe Spierer.
