Overwatch 2 fans furious after Blizzard reportedly fumbled Netflix TV series

As a dedicated gamer with years of Overwatch under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment hearing about the potential Netflix series being nixed. Overwatch’s rich lore has always been a highlight for me, and it’s disheartening to see it taking a backseat in recent times. The thought of seeing our beloved heroes brought to life on the small screen was a beacon of hope during these tough times for the game.

As reported by Jason Schreier, a Bloomberg journalist, there were discussions happening between Blizzard Entertainment and Netflix regarding the development of a TV series inspired by one of their games.

Overwatch 2‘s narrative has been a beloved aspect for players over the years, yet it has appeared less frequently as time passed. Given the significant Blizzard layoffs and the team responsible for storytelling being significantly reduced, this development is not entirely unexpected.

Since the standalone player mode for Overwatch 2 was cancelled because the initial missions didn’t sell well, there has been a scarcity of new lore, with most of it being connected to newly introduced characters instead.

According to what Jason Schreier shared during his Reddit AMA about his book, Play Nice, he disclosed some insights he gained by talking to ex- and present Blizzard employees. Interestingly, it seems that an Overwatch TV series, as well as ones for Warcraft and Diablo, were being planned at one point.

The book discloses that they were working on potential TV series collaborations with Netflix for Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo. However, it’s worth noting there was a legal dispute between Blizzard and Netflix, as reported in this Variety article.

As a gaming enthusiast, I was eagerly anticipating new game series from Blizzard, but my excitement was abruptly dashed when I heard that they were taking legal action against the streaming giant. The allegation being that they had lured away Spencer Neumann, a former CFO of Blizzard, from their ranks. According to Jason Schreier’s reports, this move effectively put an end to any prospects of these series seeing the light of day.

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment as Diablo and Warcraft seem to be overlooked. However, the silver lining is that both franchises continue to weave captivating narratives. The mesmerizing cutscenes in Diablo 4 and its Vessel of Hatred expansion are a testament to this, while World of Warcraft: The War Within promises a substantial advancement in the main storyline of WoW. Truly, fans like me are feasting on these intricate narratives.

In Overwatch 2, the latest updates are dripping with intriguing lore, introducing new characters such as Venture and Juno, along with collaborations from popular franchises like Porsche, Transformers, and My Hero Academia. Among all potential crossovers, this one was arguably most necessary for Overwatch.

“There’s no way…” replied Overwatch 2 content creator Flats.

Another user exclaimed how incredibly difficult we seemed to have lost,” others added, revealing their disappointment when they learned that the Overwatch animated series was merely in development, not already produced.
