A cycling race in Germany was disrupted when an elderly woman drove her mobility scooter onto the course, apparently to get a closer view of the racers.
If you go to a sporting event, be aware that interfering, even by accident, can have serious consequences. You could be banned from the stadium for life, and possibly from the sport entirely. At worst, you might become infamous like Steve Bartman – a name Cubs fans will remember all too well.
Usually, people prefer to watch experts perform, but sometimes audience members participate as well.
Okay, so this is wild. I was reading that during a junior bike race in Germany – the LVM Saarland Trofeo – an older woman accidentally drove her mobility scooter into the cyclists! Apparently, she ended up right in their path. It sounds like a total mess, and I’m hoping everyone’s okay.
Riders respond to viral cycling crash in German race
Videos of the event are circulating on social media, depicting a scooter colliding with other riders and causing them to fall from their bicycles.
The crash also affected 17-year-old rider Paul Vriesman, who shared details about the incident on Instagram after it forced him to withdraw from the race.
I had a rough crash, but thankfully I escaped with no serious injuries,” Vriesman shared. “It wasn’t the finish to my first race week back after months of recovery that I was hoping for, but I did make significant progress towards regaining my previous fitness level this week.
I’m disappointed to have to withdraw from the Saarland Trofeo because of an incident involving a distracted driver.
A scary situation unfolded today at the Saarland Trofeo Juniors cycling race. A spectator entered the course with her walker while riders were speeding by, creating a very dangerous moment! Thankfully, no one was hurt. #SaarlandTrofeoJuniors #LVMSaarlandTrofeo #Habkirchen #Saarland #Germany #Cycling

Cycling fans are also criticizing the unidentified woman for attempting to get closer to the race to get a better view.
It’s nearly impossible to prevent all accidents like this, so we ask that spectators please use common sense and remain away from the racing area,” explained First Cycling.
During today’s #SaarlandTrofeoJuniors race, a spectator created a very dangerous situation by walking onto the track with her walker to get a closer view while cyclists were racing by at high speeds, according to Kingdom of Cycling.
One fan described seeing several injured cyclists lying on the ground while others stood by, drinking beer and taking pictures on their phones, leading them to wonder if someone was responsible for the incident.
