Adam Driver reveals why he liked Megalopolis more than Star Wars

As a dedicated cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of modern cinema, I must say that Adam Driver‘s experiences on set couldn’t be more contrasting, and it’s a fascinating tale to follow. On one hand, we have the high-stakes, big-budget productions like Star Wars, where the galaxy far, far away feels more like a heavily regulated military base than a creative playground. The constant approval processes, multiple directors, and studio interference can make Kylo Ren’s helmet seem like a comforting embrace compared to the red tape.

Actor Adam Driver, known for his role in Megalopolis, explained that filming Francis Ford Coppola’s original movie was less pressured compared to working on the Star Wars trilogy.

Through his role as the sinister Kylo Ren in the recent Star Wars trilogy, a driver has become accustomed to being part of high-budget film productions.

On the contrary, the actor shared that working on his latest sci-fi film Megalopolis was significantly better compared to shooting a big-budget production.

In the case of Megalopolis, since Coppola was financing it himself, there was an urgency,” Driver explained to DiscussingFilms. “You didn’t have to concern yourself about people making decisions – this isn’t exclusive to Star Wars, but rather a common occurrence in larger budget films where substantial sums of money are involved.

He went on to say, “There weren’t any producers interfering, no one hovering over Francis, trying to steer him towards their vision for the film. Instead, it felt like a direct dialogue with Francis. That’s why it was one of the most rewarding shooting experiences I’ve ever had.

The driver further mentioned that Coppola’s approach to filmmaking gave him a sense of “challenging” the mainstream Hollywood movie industry, and viewers will likely experience this spirit of defiance while watching Megalopolis.

Since Driver played a significant role in the most recent Star Wars trilogy, many aspects of his character’s intentions and actions required multiple levels of approval before he was allowed to appear on set.

These movies, titled “The Force Awakens,” “The Last Jedi,” and “The Rise of Skywalker,” were not just created by two major studios (Lucasfilm and Disney). Interestingly, this trilogy underwent a directorial change twice: J.J. Abrams started and concluded the series, while Rian Johnson took over for “The Last Jedi.

Due to the large number of individuals contributing to the films, numerous plotlines and character arcs were either discarded or introduced impulsively. This could prove challenging for actors, as they were obligated to maintain a single role throughout the project’s completion.

Contrastingly, Coppola took on multiple roles for Megalopolis, directing, writing, and financing the film himself. However, he collaborated with three others in the production process to ensure its completion.

But without much supervision, a project may not always benefit, as demonstrated by Coppola’s Megalopolis facing numerous controversies prior to its release.
