As a seasoned movie reviewer who’s seen more political satire than I care to remember, I can confidently say that “Saturday Night Live” never disappoints when it comes to poking fun at the absurdities of our world. This week’s episode, hosted by Charli XCX, was no exception.
Even though “brat” summer has ended, nothing can truly be considered gone until “Saturday Night Live” gives it a spin.
On the premiere of NBC’s Saturday sketch comedy show last weekend, Bowen Yang channeled Charli XCX to serve as the host for an imaginary talk show named “The Talk Talk Show,” a tribute to one of Charli XCX’s popular song titles.
In the segment, Yang welcomed “Australian dingo twink Troye Sivan,” with whom Charli XCX is currently on the Sweat Tour. Playing the “Rush” singer was Sarah Sherman, who lifted up her shirt to reveal fake washboard abs.
“Troye, are you happy to be here?” asked Yang, to which Sherman responded, “Naur!”
Later, Yang reviewed the latest happenings and categorized them as either “juvenile” or “natural.” The judgment: Hunter Biden’s laptop incident is “juvenile,” while Mark Robinson’s search history is “natural.” Barron Trump attending NYU is “juvenile,” but NYU itself is “natural.” Amy Adams in the movie “Nightbitch”? “Juvenile.” Eric Adams’ indictment? “Natural.
As a cinephile, I’d rephrase it this way: “I welcomed the guests on ‘The Talk Talk Show’: the renowned queer nightlife figure Susanne Bartsch and the well-known CNN personality Kaitlan Collins, portrayed by the Saturday Night Live host Jean Smart and Chloe Fineman.
Later on, Yang posed political queries towards Susanne Bartsch of Smart, while he asked a question about ketamine usage towards CNN’s anchor, Fineman. (Paraphrased)
Afterward, the “rebel of C-SPAN,” also known as U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett from Texas, portrayed by Ego Nwodim, made her appearance. She then shared her candid opinions on various topics, including JD Vance (“smoky-eyed couch-seductive yet unable to order donuts but has a perfect donut figure”) and gerrymandering (“irrational, twisted, and corrupt district boundaries”).
Charli XCX’s sixth studio album, titled ‘Brat,’ dropped on June 7th and swiftly resonated with both cultural trends (and in some aspects, political sentiment). Fueled by its club bangers influenced by hyperpop and a distinctive slime-green theme, it emerged as the soundtrack of the summer. Furthermore, it served as inspiration for TikTok dances and memes, extending even to the Kamala Harris campaign momentarily using the term ‘brat.’
Ahead of her “SNL” appearance, Charli XCX debuted “Brat” in New York City at Madison Square Garden alongside Troye Sivan, Lorde, and Addison Rae. On October 11th, she will unveil a remix album for the song.
Starting off its golden jubilee, ‘Saturday Night Live’ premiered on September 28 with Jean Smart as the host and Jelly Roll as the musical guest. To mark this significant milestone, a live prime-time special is planned for February 16. The show airs every week at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC, and you can also stream it on Peacock.
