Digimon's Monster Hunter Virtual Pets Let You Raise Your Own Rathalos

As someone who grew up in the golden age of handheld virtual pets, this Monster Hunter x Digimon collaboration has me absolutely thrilled! The idea of raising and battling my favorite monsters from both worlds is a dream come true. I remember spending countless hours with my Tamagotchi and Digital Monster back in the day, so having these modern versions at my fingertips is truly a nostalgic delight.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, Monster Hunter will collaborate with Digimon to create some exceptional Monster Hunter merchandise – specifically, Monster Hunter themed Digital Pets. This partnership seems quite fitting, unlike the forthcoming Monster Hunter designed Fender Telecaster electric guitar (it’s visually stunning, though).

Two types of Monster Hunter V-Pet Color gadgets exist, each themed around legendary Monster Hunter creatures: one red device modeled after Rathalos, and another blue device showcasing Zinogre. Interestingly, these iconic monsters also have unique versions that blend them with classic Digimon characters. For instance, Rathalos teams up with Greymon to create RathalosGreymon, while Zinogre pairs with Garurumon to become ZinoGarurumon. You can acquire these special forms by participating in the pet-raising games and battles built into the device itself.

You can collect and level up over 30 other monsters in the game, including other Monster Hunter creatures like Mizutsune, Rajaang, Nargacuga, Tigrex, Gore Magala, and Khezu. Like other V-Pet Color devices, these measure roughly 1.75 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide and feature full color mini LCD screens, buttons, and speakers. You can preorder the Monster Hunter V-Pets for $100 each at Big Bad Toy Store. We’d expect preorders to go live at other retailers soon. Both models are expected to release next February.

  • Monster Hunter x Digimon V-Pet Color – Rathalos — $100
  • Monster Hunter x Digimon V-Pet Color – Zinogre — $100

As a gamer, I must admit that these V-Pets with the vibrant full-color displays are quite the pricey finds compared to their regular counterparts boasting low-pixel LCDs. It’s not just their cost, but also their scarcity in North America that makes them hard to come by. On Amazon, you can grab a Japanese import V-Pet with a stunning full-color screen from resellers for around $105 – it originally retailed at $70 upon release.

Back in the ’90s, when I was just starting out as a gamer, my world got turned upside down by these amazing little keychain toys called Digimon V-Pets. For those who haven’t experienced them yet, they were electronic pet-raising games that ignited the Digimon series. Nowadays, Digimon is famous for its anime, trading card game, and video games, but it all began with a line of virtual pets called Digital Monster – later known as Digimon V-Pets. These toys hit the market shortly after Bandai’s other popular virtual pet sensation, Tamagotchi. Unlike raising an ordinary alien creature, these V-Pet monsters were raised for battle – both in the game and against fellow gamers!

If you’re intrigued by the idea of training a warrior for combat without breaking the bank, consider these updated editions available on Amazon for under $15.
