As a seasoned animation enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional stories and a soft spot for Japanese animation, I’m thrilled about this year’s Animation Is Film Festival lineup! The prospect of witnessing the North American premiere of Naoko Yamada’s “A Color Within” is particularly exciting, given her exceptional work on “A Silent Voice.
As a dedicated cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the Animation Is Film Festival has unveiled its 2024 lineup! Some of the movies set to captivate us include “A Color Within,” a heartwarming animation, “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” an action-packed adventure, and “Memoir of a Snail,” a unique tale that promises an intriguing perspective.
This year’s annual festival, marking its seventh edition, spans from October 18th to the 20th, featuring three significant highlights each day, as well as filmmaker workshops, extended screenings, and numerous premieres. The event takes place at the TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood.
The event commences on October 18th, featuring the first North American showing of the captivating and daring animated movie “A Color Within,” produced by Science Saru, Japan’s renowned animation studio. This film is directed by Naoko Yamada, a celebrated Japanese director famous for her work on “A Silent Voice.
On October 19th, the main event will be the North American debut of “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie” from Warner Bros. Animation, directed by the esteemed filmmaker Pete Browngardt. The movie is being distributed by Ketchup entertainment.
On October 20th, I’ll be thrilled to attend the grand finale of the festival, where we’ll have the exclusive Los Angeles premiere of “Memoir of a Snail,” produced by IFC Films and directed by the illustrious Adam Elliot – a filmmaker who has graced us with an Oscar and this year’s Cristal Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. As one of the founding members of AIF, it’s particularly exciting to see his work on the big screen once more!
Among the three main attractions, the festival plans to showcase award-winning films from Annecy Prize, such as “Flow” and “Sultana’s Dream,” together with the short movie titled “Percebes.
Moreover, these sessions featuring filmmakers are planned for “Behind the Scenes of Inside Out 2,” “Moana 2,” “Transformers: The Reboot,” “The Wild Robot’s Journey,” and “An Unusual Christmas Tale.
Additionally, screenings will include the U.S. debut of Netflix’s “Mononoke: Phantom of the Rain,” the North American premiere of the documentary “Miyazaki, Ode to Nature,” a sneak peek at the work-in-progress “Yoppaman,” and a 15th anniversary showing of Takeshi Koike’s “Redline.
Over seven iterations, Animation is Film has grown into an event that animation enthusiasts can’t afford to miss. Annecy takes great pride in our ongoing collaboration. This year, attendees will encounter a remarkable assortment that showcases the finest of cinema, and we are particularly proud of our short films program within AIF, ‘Best of Annecy WIA.’ This program will offer moviegoers the chance to view some exceptional shorts, including ‘Percebes’ by Alexandra Ramires and Laura Gonçalves, which was honored with our Cristal Award for a short film earlier this year.
