Nobody Wants This Recap: The Matzah Ballers Playoff Run

As a seasoned movie reviewer who has seen his fair share of romantic comedies, I must say that “Nobody Wants This” is a delightful blend of humor, drama, and a dash of sisterly rivalry.

It might seem like meeting Joanne’s friends would be less nerve-wracking than family gatherings, but it turns out that’s not the case for Noah. He confesses he’s genuinely anxious about their upcoming brunch, especially since he already knows one of them – Ashley. However, Noah discovers there was no need to fret. Ashley is fond of him from the start, and Ryan and Charles warm up to him quickly. Noah charms them effortlessly by asking for a phone charger at the restaurant, which they provide, and by talking about whoever they want to criticize. In short, he wins their favor easily.

Joanne is a different story. It would be awesome if Nobody Wants This gave Joanne the upper hand in the relationship at least once, but it seems not to be. It’s not that Noah’s friends don’t like her — they actually think she’s great when she comes to one of Noah’s basketball games (yes, his team is named the Matzah Ballers). But their wives? Their wives are under strict orders from Esther to hate Joanne no matter what. They are all friends with Rebecca, and they are standing by her side even if, you know, it’s more complicated than that, and Noah is a grown man who has repeatedly said he doesn’t want to be with Rebecca, et cetera. When Joanne tries to greet all the WAGs (wives and girlfriends of athletes, like Victoria Beckham … and no one else that Joanne knows about), Esther doesn’t even want the other women talking to her, and they all leave — and force their husbands to leave, too.

Indeed, Joanne appears quite anxious and exaggerates the severity of the situation by calling it “the biggest problem I’ve ever faced in my life,” a statement that seems overly dramatic. On the other hand, Noah seems excessively laid-back about this predicament. His response, “They’ll grow to like you” doesn’t address the current issue at hand. Perhaps he could engage in a direct conversation with his sister-in-law, but it seems everyone is apprehensive around Esther. (While the show could work on developing Esther’s character more fully, I remind myself that Rebecca is her friend and is advocating for her, which is reasonable to some extent.)

Fortunately, when Joanne seeks a bit more assistance, he offers guidance on charming each woman. During the Matzah Balls playoff game, where they’re incredibly enthusiastic, Joanne mentions her wedding in Aruba to Talia and asks about her wedding dress. Rachel, who creates “inspirational chokers,” though it sounds contradictory, is genuine – Joanne sports one at the game. Remarkably, she manages not to be taken aback by the woman nursing her 5-year-old, an achievement for most, but especially Joanne. However, Esther, despite Noah’s advice to criticize others to gain her favor, remains as frosty as ever, giving Joanne nothing.

Joanne requires assistance. She reaches out to Morgan, who promptly hurries to stand by her sibling’s side. These ladies aren’t known for their kindness or popularity; Joanne and Morgan are the popular ones with a mean streak! To win over others on Joanne’s side, she has a plan: Get them all tipsy. Esther, who continues to label Joanne and Morgan as ‘Whore One’ and ‘Whore Two’, respectively, seems rather excessive – but when faced with the situation, she can’t help but join in. All of her friends have already accepted drinks, so Esther feels compelled to partake. Since the Matzah Ballers are notorious for their poor shooting skills, they decide to down a drink whenever they miss, and boy, do they get intoxicated! The guys are hopeless. Hearing Sasha shout “Kobe!” before chucking one brick after another will always bring a smile to my face.

As a cinema enthusiast, it seems all the ladies in question are having a blast together. Joanne manages to arrange a double date with Esther and Sasha, and even elicits a rare smile from the latter, a definite stride forward. This development is a victory for Joanne. (The Matzah Ballers, they might lose this one, but it’s close!) While Joanne and Esther aren’t exactly pals yet, there’s no denying that Joanne is warming up to her. Now, I can head home without the burden of stress, ready to unwind with my beau because he seems quite amorous: “Those squeaky noises you made with your sneakers were quite attractive,” I tell Noah. Meanwhile, things are heating up between Sasha and Esther too – not in a romantic sense, but in terms of food spiciness: He suggests they grab some spicy grub since he’s already sweating profusely and “we should make the most of it.

Unfortunately, Esther can’t accept that appealing proposition as she’s going out with Rebecca, who’s already parked outside waiting for her. Sasha, aware of the situation, advises his wife to avoid causing trouble since it appears she deliberately set things up to create a ruckus. However, there seems to be a misunderstanding here; while Joanne and Noah remain unaware, this act only brings pain to Rebecca, who spots them and is deeply hurt by their presence. Truly, such an action is extremely unfair to a friend!!

Unaware of the commotion, Esther finds herself in a situation where things are about to unfold mysteriously. Back at Noah’s residence, when Joanne searches for a sweater in his closet, she stumbles upon a hidden box containing items related to Noah and Rebecca. This discovery leaves her disturbed, as Joanne starts experiencing another bout of emotional turmoil.

As a movie reviewer, let me share my thoughts on the latest episode of “Best-Bud News”: In an unexpected turn of events, when I find Morgan inebriated without a ride home, I step up to help. She’s puzzled by my good deed, and I have to clarify – it’s simply the right thing to do, and she needed a lift. It seems these characters, Morgan and Joanne, have never encountered a decent man before. The Roklov brothers are certainly broadening their horizons! By the end of our ride together, they both reluctantly admit that, yes, it appears we’re buddies now. I hope this show refrains from any strange twists with this unlikely friendship. Here’s to these quirky souls becoming best friends!
