Montclair Film Festival, Backed by Stephen Colbert, Opens With Edward Berger’s ‘Conclave’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned mother of three, I can wholeheartedly relate to Bethany Hall’s hilariously savage yet poignant journey through motherhood and miscarriages in “About Those Miscarriages and Other Messes I’ve Made”. The emotional rollercoaster that is parenthood is indeed a wild ride, filled with laughter, tears, and the occasional feeling of being pulled in every direction at once.

Edward Berger‘s “Conclave” will open the 13th edition of the Montclair Film Festival on Oct. 18.

The movie, debuted recently at the Telluride Film Festival, chronicles the events following the sudden demise of the Pope and the subsequent selection process for his successor. Based on Robert Harris’s novel, it features Stanley Tucci, Ralph Fiennes, and Isabella Rossellini in lead roles, making it a potential frontrunner for awards this season. Notably, director Berger, whose previous work “All Quiet on the Western Front” garnered four Academy Awards in 2023, will engage in a Q&A following the opening night showing at Montclair’s Wellmont Theater.

Situated in an upscale, northern New Jersey suburb that boasts numerous creative entertainment figures such as Stephen Colbert, a longtime supporter of MFF, this film festival (MFF) will showcase a blend of prominent narrative movies and documentaries. In addition to these films, the event will host panel discussions. As part of MFF’s Storyteller Series, Stephen Colbert will moderate a talk with “Barefoot Contessa” star Ina Garten on October 20th. Attendees with tickets for this event will receive a copy of Ina Garten’s latest memoir titled “Be Ready When the Luck Happens.

Alongside “Conclave,” several other potential Academy Award contenders such as Gints Zilbalodis’s animated film “Flow,” Steve McQueen’s World War II drama “Blitz,” Jacques Audiard’s redemption-themed thriller “Emilia Perez,” and Sean Baker’s movie “Anora” will be showcased at the MFF.

This year, the Much-Anticipated Film Festival (MFF) will present an array of exciting documentaries such as Asif Kapadia’s “2073,” R.J. Cutler’s “Martha,” Petra Costa’s “Apocalypse in the Tropics,” and the world debut of Nanfu Wang’s “Night is Not Eternal.

Tom Hall, Montclair Film’s artistic director and co-head, expresses heartfelt gratitude towards this year’s filmmakers for sharing their creations with us. He finds the current program to be deeply connected with the world, offering our viewers a chance to delve into a diverse range of thoughts and perspectives. He is excited about the prospect of connecting these filmmakers with our audience, aiming to create an extraordinary festival experience that will stay in everyone’s memory.

Four distinct award categories will be handed out, encompassing documentary, fiction, homegrown New Jersey Films (emphasizing non-fiction works by Garden State artists), and Future/Now, a category designed to foster emerging talent in independent filmmaking through The Mark Urman Award. This prestigious honor comes with a $5,000 cash prize for the winning filmmaker, serving as incentive and support for their future projects.

For this year’s MFF documentary film competition, we have the additions of Mati Diop’s “Dahomey,” Silje Evensmo Jacobsen’s “A New King of Wilderness,” and Johan Grimonpez’s “Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat,” joining works like Costa’s “Apocalyptic in the Tropics” and Wang’s “Night is Not Eternal.”

This year’s fiction film contest showcases “All We Imagine As Light” by Payal Kapadia, “Grand Tour” by Miguel Gomes, “I’m Still Here” by Walter Salles, “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” by Mohammad Rasoulof, and “Universal Language” by Matthew Rankin.

Previously declared, William Goldenberg’s movie “Unstoppable” and Kapadia’s “2073” have been chosen as the main fiction and documentary films for the Movie Festival Foundation (MFF) respectively. The film “Flow,” directed by Zilbalodis, will be screened as the festival’s feature presentation suitable for families.

Malcolm Washington’s “The Piano Lesson” will close MFF on Oct. 27.

Discussing Hollywood’s Film Awards Season: Who Takes Home the Trophy and Why It Matters

Montclair’s Own Series

Bethany Hall’s comedy show ‘About Those Miscarriages and Other Mishaps’ offers a raw, riotous exploration of the complexities and exhilaration of motherhood. This journey into parenthood is so intricate and invigorating that it elicits simultaneous cheers, tears, and laughter. The show bravely challenges the silence, shame, and guilt often associated with miscarriages and parenting. With a touch of humor, it sensitively intertwines pain, sorrow, and the electrifying, exhilarating (yet exhausting) joy that comes with parenthood.

In this Yearly Discourse: Overview of the Movie Industry, films hold an extraordinary ability to influence society, touch hearts, and sometimes leave us awestruck. However, due to repeated interruptions in the film production chain – such as cinema closures due to pandemics, a shift towards streaming platforms, and strikes from guilds like WGA and SAG-AFTRA that nearly halted all production – Hollywood is adapting and investigating new tactics for releasing movies and reaching viewers.

In the wake of ChatGPT’s launch in 2022, the creative sectors like Hollywood have been swiftly exploring, leveraging, and safeguarding against AI technologies. These intelligent machines hold tremendous potential for innovative storytelling, but their influence on cinema’s essence stirs apprehension among industry players. As AI technology advances at a breakneck pace, content providers and creators must adapt to the transformation it brings to filmmaking and distribution.
