Gaming Streaming Star Rachell ‘Valkyrae’ Hofstetter Launches Anime-Focused Media Company Hihi Studios (EXCLUSIVE)

As a lifelong anime enthusiast and a movie buff who’s spent countless hours binge-watching Studio Ghibli films and Naruto episodes, I can’t help but be thrilled by the news of Valkyrae’s foray into the world of media production with Hihi Studios. The name alone, inspired by her signature “hihi” greeting, is a delightful nod to her community and a smart marketing move that will undoubtedly resonate with fans.

Notable video game streamer Rachel Hofstetter (better recognized as Valkyrae) has established her personal media enterprise, Hihi Studios. This creative venture is dedicated to creating and distributing intellectual properties, particularly focusing on graphic novels, TV shows, and movies with a strong emphasis on anime-style content.

Initially, Hihi Studios partnered with digital comic book platform GlobalComix for a collaborative publishing agreement. This partnership involves Hihi Studios receiving funding, creative development, and distribution, both physically and digitally, for their inaugural intellectual property (IP).

According to the company, Hihi Studios intends to cover all aspects by launching series, merchandise, and products under each intellectual property (IP). They strive to tell stories that reflect our modern world through their characters, plots, and themes. To achieve this, they plan to engage with global communities of anime, manga, and animation. Their goal is to uphold and pay tribute to the existing culture while developing fresh and custom series influenced by Japanese anime and manga, incorporating new ideas and viewpoints. They aim to create narratives that resonate in a world driven by excessive optimization, connecting audiences seeking meaningful stories and adventures with them.

HiHi Studios was established through a collaboration with Kai Gayoso, Valkyrae’s manager and co-founder, as well as Gabe Pepe and Madeline McFerren from Range Media Partners, who also represent Valkyrae.

Valkyrae is repped by Range Media Partners, WME, Hansen Jacobson Teller & Hoberman and imPRint.

See below for EbMaster’s interview with Valkyrae on launching Hihi Studios.

How did you decide on the name for the media company?

The company is named Hihi Studios. For many years I would always greet my community and streams by saying “hihi” and I figured this would be a fun way to have a little easter egg for my community within the company. I wanted the name to be easy to remember, welcoming and I love the symmetry of the logo.

Why did you decide to launch your own company rather than team up with an existing one?

Over the past while, I’ve had the good fortune of collaborating with exceptional artists in promoting their intellectual properties. My audience has consistently shown enthusiasm towards my endeavors, and I believe it’s now time for me to spearhead unique concepts in a fresh medium that remains unexplored by me. I envision myself being deeply engaged in this project for an extended period, ideally for many years.

Will the focus be strictly on anime inspired IP?

I’ve had a long-standing affection for anime and animation, which will undoubtedly fuel our endeavors in narrative development and the communities surrounding different fan bases. We welcome any form of storytelling from graphic novels, comics, or manga to anime, as our interests are vast and open.

What projects are you first looking to adapt?

We aim to develop and share captivating stories that resonate with me on a personal level. Some tales might delve into mature themes such as death or conflict, but we aren’t shy about tackling difficult subjects head-on. In the end, I believe the most powerful narratives are those that explore the shared human experience of self-discovery, stories that viewers can connect with and enjoy while being entertained.
