Box Office: ‘The Wild Robot’ Has $2 Million in Previews, ‘Megalopolis’ Makes $770,000

As a seasoned moviegoer with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that this weekend promises to be quite an exciting one at the box office! The family-friendly animated adventure “The Wild Robot” seems like a captivating tale, especially with Lupita Nyong’o lending her voice to the titular robot. I can’t help but reminisce about my own encounter with a lost robot – albeit in a more literal sense during one of my tech-support days back in the early 90s!

In the first previews of ‘The Wild Robot’, a fresh, animation-driven family adventure from Universal and DreamWorks Animation, the film has already generated an impressive earnings of $1.95 million at the box office on Thursday.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excitedly anticipating the release of Director Chris Saunders’ movie – a captivating tale about a lost robot on a planet teeming with wildlife. The film is poised to rake in between $24 million to $30 million during its opening weekend, dethroning Warner Bros.’ spooky sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which has reigned supreme for the past three weeks. It looks like Tim Burton’s film will have to settle for second place in this week of release, with an estimated earnings of $13 million to $15 million. The animated origin story “Transformers One,” which debuted last week, will likely find itself in third place, projecting a haul of $12 million to $14 million after securing the second spot last weekend.

In the story “The Wild Robot,” Lupita Nyong’o plays the leading role as Roz, an automated being, more commonly known as ROZZUM unit 7134. After being stranded on a mysterious planet, Roz encounters various creatures, whose voices are provided by renowned actors such as Pedro Pascal (as a red fox named Fink), Kit Conner (a Canada goose named Brightbill), Catherine O’Hara (a mother opossum called Pinktail), Bill Nighy (a wise goose referred to as Longneck), Mark Hamill (a grizzly bear known as Thorn), Ving Rhames (a falcon called Thunderbolt), and Stephanie Hsu (another robot named Vontra).

This weekend, the highly anticipated sci-fi masterpiece “Megalopolis” from acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola will hit theaters. Despite a massive budget of $120 million, mostly funded by Coppola himself, it made $770,000 during previews. Lionsgate acquired the film post-premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and will release and market it for a distribution fee. However, it’s projected to earn only around $5 million to $7 million in its opening weekend, which may fall short of expectations.

Adam Driver plays the role of Gaius Caesar Catilina, the head of a futuristic urban center known as Nova Roma. He clashes with corrupt Mayor Franklin Cicero, portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito, in an effort to restore the city following a catastrophic natural event. The ensemble also features Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D. B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.
