From Season 4: The Real Reason For Donna’s Near-Death Experience Addressed By Star

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 6 of From season 4, titled “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” Elizabeth Saunders, who plays Donna on From, has explained what really caused her character’s life-threatening situation.

In season 4, episode 6 of From, Donna suffers a heart attack and briefly appears to die before Kristi Miller, Marielle Sinclair, and Boyd Stevens try to revive her. The show doesn’t reveal what caused the heart attack – whether it was a pre-existing condition, the stress of facing the monsters, or something else unknown.

During a conversation with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant about season 4 of From, actress Harold Perrineau was asked what she thought ultimately caused her character’s heart attack. She explained that it was likely a combination of the emotional stress from caring for the Matthews family and other people, the physical damage from the attack by the doll monster, and even the harmful influence of the Town itself. Here’s what she had to say:

I believe it’s a mix of factors, but the main focus is the Matthews family, though this is happening in other situations too. As their relationships deepen, the fear of losing those connections also grows, and that’s really putting a lot of pressure on Donna. She feels a strong need to support everyone, and she’s determined to do what’s best for them, which means the consequences of failure feel much bigger now.

The dolls and the attack she experienced, even though she lived through it, left her physically weakened. It seems like this, combined with everything else happening, made even a small disagreement overwhelming for her, and that’s why it escalated when it did.

Honestly, I kept wondering if the show’s creators were intentionally trying to upset me with this storyline. It really got to me, and maybe that’s just me being too invested! The writers never give us any hints about what’s coming, except John Griffin did warn me I was in for a shock and would survive it, which I really appreciated. If I’d known what was coming beforehand, I genuinely think I’d have had a heart attack just reading the script – I’m really scared of those! I even thought, ‘I don’t want to film this scene!’ But it’s my job, so I pushed through it.

Donna, as the person everyone in Colony House relies on, is accustomed to looking after a lot of people. But keeping them safe is much harder now that she knows the nightmares of the deceased are actually coming true. It’s far more dangerous than just dealing with the monsters that appear at night, because now any nightmare from the dead could threaten them at any moment.

As Saunders points out, Donna has become very close to the Matthews family, especially after Jim Matthews passed away. She’s been taking care of Julie and Ethan, and providing support to Tabitha, particularly helping Ethan feel secure. This makes it incredibly painful for Donna to see Tabitha and Ethan threatened by the monsters, and to realize she can’t shield them from everything.

It’s possible the Town caused Donna’s heart attack. She’s essential to maintaining order and is connected to everyone in the community. Her death could have had devastating consequences: Boyd might have fallen apart, Colony House could have become chaotic, and the Matthews family would have suffered another loss so soon after Jim’s death. The Town enjoys tormenting people, and putting Donna through a near-death experience seems like a particularly cruel act.

However, it doesn’t appear the Man in Yellow (Douglas E. Hughes) was involved this time. Instead, the villain, disguised as Sophia (Julia Doyle), focuses on getting close to Henry Kavanaugh (Robert Joy) and secretly makes him drink the Man in Yellow’s blood during the episode.

Now that Donna is safe, the characters from From have made it through the latest crisis, but another one is probably just around the corner. Henry having the Man in Yellow’s blood inside him will definitely cause problems, and their plan to enter the town tunnels and remove the remains of the dead children is likely to create even more complications.

From season 4 releases new episodes on Sundays on MGM+.
