Twitch streamer Hasan Piker denied entry to UK over “public good” concerns

Twitch streamer Hasan Piker says the UK government has denied him entry into the country. Officials revoked his travel permission just before a scheduled trip to London.

HasanAbi, a popular Twitch streamer known as Piker, announced on June 1st that he was unable to travel to the UK because his travel authorization had been cancelled.

The political commentator had been due to appear at SXSW London and other events during the visit.

Home Office says Piker’s presence “may not be conducive to the public good”

Piker says he found out his travel approval was canceled right before he was supposed to leave.

Reuters and The Guardian both reported that the Home Office has decided to deny entry to Piker, stating his presence in the UK could be harmful to the public interest.

Currently, the Home Office hasn’t released any additional information. However, the decision has sparked online conversation, likely because Piker is a well-known and influential streamer and political commentator on Twitch.

Hasan’s uncle, Cenk Uygur, said they were also prevented from entering the UK after trying to fly to London for the event.

I was really bummed to see what happened with Piker. He went on X and basically said he thinks this whole thing is politically motivated, which isn’t surprising. He also sounded super frustrated that he can’t go to the events he’d planned while he was in London, and honestly, I feel for him. It’s a shame he’s missing out.

SXSW statement and Hasan’s response

Per Variety, a SXSW spokesperson released a statement on June 1, stating:

Who enters the U.K. is decided by the Home Office and the individual travelers. SXSW London’s job is to bring together a wide variety of viewpoints. We’re still planning a full program this week with over 800 speakers, artists, and films, all designed to encourage open conversations and the sharing of ideas.

Referring to SXSW’s response, Hasan explained that his conference appearance was just a small part of his overall trip. He was upset that the organizers hadn’t supported him or his uncle, stating he would never work with them again. He also suggested anyone who bought a ticket specifically to see him should ask for their money back.

It’s currently unknown whether Hasan can challenge the ruling. TopMob has reached out to the UK Home Office for a statement.
