As a seasoned moviegoer with a penchant for films that delve into the complexities of human relationships and the intricacies of the human heart, I find myself utterly captivated by the premise of Paula Korva’s “Sudden Outbursts of Emotion.” Having navigated my own share of midlife crises and the ensuing existential dilemmas, I can’t help but feel a strange sense of kinship with Jane, the travel agent who finds herself in uncharted territory when her partner proposes they open up their relationship.
LevelK has joined Paula Korva’s “Sudden Outbursts of Emotion,” a humorous exploration of contemporary love and midlife dilemmas with a sex-positive approach, which claimed the top award this week at the Finnish Film Affair. This event is an annual industry gathering that takes place alongside the Helsinki International Film Festival.
As a passionate moviegoer, I found myself drawn into Korva’s first film, which revolves around a travel agent named Jane. Despite selling thrilling escapades to others, Jane is content in her own life with her partner, Mikki. However, their bond seems unbreakable until one day, Mikki surprises me with a proposal that shakes the very foundations of our relationship – an open one. In an attempt to preserve our love, I reluctantly agree to experience the exclusive sex party known as the Isle of Lust, a gathering popular among the creative class.
The experiment undergoes an unexpected shift as Jane develops romantic feelings for Valma, who practices polyamory. Initially, all seems well, but fresh faces and complex emotions start to appear. This cinematic piece delves into the rich tapestry of love, navigating through its complexities and offering a challenging yet empowering exploration of self-discovery. It raises the question: Can there truly be too much love?
Marko Talli, from Helsinki’s Yellow Film & TV, has created “Sudden Outbursts of Emotion.” This heartfelt production was financially backed by Nelonen Media and the Finnish Film Foundation. It will make its debut in Finnish cinemas early in 2025, courtesy of Nelonen. For the rest of the world, LevelK has secured the distribution rights. As of now, the movie is undergoing post-production.
Korva, who transformed the movie from Anna-Leena Härkönen’s novel “Kenraaliharjoitus,” was captivated by its portrayal of midlife crises. She referred to it as a stage in life that resembles a bittersweet taste, where adults tend to behave like teenagers once more.
During mid-life, there’s a sense of humor mixed with sadness as individuals come to terms with the fact that they won’t live forever. It’s as if a realization hits them that they need to act quickly and bring about significant transformations in their lives,” she explained.
In her movie, the main characters delve into investigating polyamorous relationships and the Helsinki sex-party culture, as directed by Korva, who ponders “what it means to be in a relationship in our modern era.
Open relationships, although they might seem modern, have been around for a long time. However, historically, I believe they were primarily driven by men.” She continued, “Traditionally, the male partner held most of the power in these relationships, setting the rules.” She added, “But now, in Finland, there’s a shift in this discussion towards a more female-centric viewpoint and uplifting women’s rights.
Speaking with EbMaster, LevelK CEO Tine Klint commended Korva’s first film, LevelK, stating, “It’s a humorous, sex-positive production that thoughtfully incorporates the female perspective. It’s engaging, enjoyable. What’s not appealing? We see opportunities for cross-media and rights expansion, and we’re thrilled to collaborate with an established producer and emerging directorial talent.
Talli expressed: “We’re delighted to begin working with LevelK, and we think this partnership will pave the way for our film’s global adventure. Paula has a unique ability to blend heartfelt and humorous elements in her storytelling, creating a tale that explores the diversity of modern love and midlife crises, where adults behave like teenagers. I’m confident that anyone seeking their own path to love will find this story engaging.
Finnish Film Affair runs Sept. 25 – 27.
