After a tense standoff, a phone call home, and plenty of hints about what was to come, season 3 of Euphoria has ended – and it might be the end of the show altogether. Leading up to Sunday’s finale, betting sites predicted a tragic outcome for Rue Bennett (Zendaya). She was caught in a dangerous game, trying to manipulate several people – including a drug dealer, a woman named Laurie, and the DEA – to save herself and potentially help others. Maddy (Alexa Demie) had warned the drug dealer about Rue’s conversations with federal agents, and Faye (Chloe Cherry) attempted to tell her abusive boyfriend about her plan to steal from him, even after he hit her. Things looked grim for Rue, and even worse for Nate, but she was in a very precarious situation.
Surprisingly, Rue survived the intense, dramatic events of the finale, but ultimately succumbed to an overdose caused by fentanyl-laced pain pills. According to creator Sam Levinson, the intention was to portray addiction truthfully, as well as explore the pain and emotional distress it causes. Rue passed away 44 minutes into the 104-minute episode, following a dreamlike sequence where she was reunited with her mother and saw Fez once more. Levinson explained he avoids overly optimistic storylines, believing that a realistic outcome for someone like Rue is, unfortunately, not survival.
