Start here if: You’ve never watched an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
Hello there! Step into the vibrant cityscape of our fictitious Seattle, a place where life’s complexities intertwine – romance, heartbreak, survival, and groundbreaking medical breakthroughs. All these stories unfold at Seattle Grace Hospital. Your journey here is filled with countless lessons and exciting moments to anticipate! It’s highly recommended that you delve into the captivating world of Grey’s Anatomy, especially seasons one and two, as they offer a rich tapestry of 36 episodes that are truly treasures waiting to be discovered.
Person to Know
Meredith Grey from Seattle Grace, portrayed by Ellen Pompeo, has a few preferences: she enjoys voice-overs setting the episode’s theme, tequila, performing surgeries, and elevator rides filled with unspoken sexual tension. However, there are things she dislikes as well: being compared to her mother, renowned surgeon Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), keeping her mother’s advanced early-onset Alzheimer’s a secret, discovering that her one-night stand is also her superior at work, and receiving hugs.
Must-See Episode
In the premiere of Season 1, it’s highly recommended you give it a watch as it’s quite engaging! You’ll be introduced to most of the key characters for the early seasons. Besides Meredith, these include Cristina Yang, a dedicated surgeon adored by Grey’s Anatomy fans; George O’Malley, who’s rather dorky and has feelings for Meredith; Izzie Stevens, a cheerful woman with a modeling past; Alex Karev, portrayed as a total jerk. Additionally, you’ll meet the hospital hierarchy: Miranda Bailey, often referred to as the ‘Nazi’, but she’s genuinely delightful; Richard Webber, the head of surgery who knew Ellis Grey and is dealing with recovery from alcoholism; Preston Burke, an arrogant cardio-thoracic surgeon; and Derek Shepherd, a skilled neurosurgeon known for his good looks and hair.
Relationship Watch
Meredith and Derek: Mer and Der (Patrick Dempsey) are essentially the epitome of royalty on Grey’s Anatomy.
Person to Know
As a dedicated cinephile, let me recount an unforgettable moment from the season finale of the series: A captivating redhead strides into Seattle Grace, zeroes in on Derek and Meredith, and casually introduces herself as Addison Shepherd, followed by a statement that left us all stunned – “I’m sure you’re the woman who’s sharing my husband.” Indeed, it was then we discovered that Derek was already married.
Vocab Lesson
McDreamy (n.): The affectionate term bestowed upon Derek Shepherd by Cristina Yang during the second episode of Season 1. The name endures.
Start here if: You stopped watching once Addison showed up.
In season two, we delve into the aftermath of this disclosure and Meredith and Derek grapple with their emotions towards one another, despite Derek being married. It’s a challenging situation and unfortunately, they don’t succeed in overcoming their feelings.
Must-See Episodes
“A Tragic Bond” (Season 2, Episode 6)
In the sixteenth episode of Season 2, titled “It’s the End of the World,” and the seventeenth episode, named “As We Know It,” an intense and suspenseful story unfolds. Meredith is in a critical situation where she must maintain contact with a bomb implanted in a man’s body to prevent it from detonating. Meanwhile, Bailey delivers a baby, and Kyle Chandler plays the role of the bomb-squad leader. Tragically, his character meets his end. These episodes, shown after the Super Bowl in 2006, were captivating television experiences.
Vocab Lesson
Your Person (n.): The unique human being you feel most comfortable with, regardless of the situation. This is the individual who truly understands you. The term originated when Cristina designated Meredith as her emergency contact for her abortion appointment. They have been each other’s constant companions throughout their lives.
People to Know
Adele Webber (Loretta Devine): Richard’s no-nonsense wife who hates how much he works.
Thatcher Grey (Jeff Perry): Meredith’s estranged father who has a new family.
Mark Sloan (Eric Dane): Known as McSteamy, he’s Derek’s close companion – a skilled plastic surgeon. He had an affair with Addison and travels to Seattle with the intention of winning her affection once more.
Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez): An orthopedic surgeon who falls for George.
Relationship Watch
Meredith, Derek, and Addison: Derek moved away from NYC after discovering Addison’s infidelity with his friend. Despite Meredith’s encouragement, Derek chose not to pursue her (he still harbored deep feelings for her), as he wanted to salvage his 11-year marriage instead.
More Must-See Episodes
Season 2 finale consists of a three-part tale (with a total of 27 episodes in season 2!). Burke gets wounded. Izzie sabotages Denny’s mechanical heart device to reactivate his transplant eligibility, potentially jeopardizing her own license for the man she adores. Heartbreakingly, Denny passes away an hour after proposing to her. The indelible memory of Izzie in a pink prom dress crying in Alex’s arms while Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” plays remains etched in the mind of every Grey’s Anatomy enthusiast. Furthermore, Meredith and Derek engage in passionate, steamy encounters, forcing her to decide between him and Finn.
Start here if: You stopped watching when Denny died.
Denny was incredibly endearing, yet the defeat was hard. However, Seattle Grace mostly recovers, and it’s time for you to do the same as well.
Must-See Episodes
In the sixteenth episode of Season 3, titled ‘Drowning on Dry Land’, we delve into a major ferry boat accident that serves as a pivotal moment for various characters. Izzie regains her surgical confidence following Denny, performing a brain operation in the field. Alex demonstrates growth in patient care. Meredith, however, finds herself drowning in Puget Sound, a symbol of her despair. Derek manages to save her and revive her. The episode is intense and gripping, with a somewhat grim turn as Meredith temporarily leaves life for an otherworldly limbo at Seattle Grace Hospital.
In Season 3, Episode 25, it’s shown that instead of being united, Burke departs from Cristina at their wedding ceremony. However, no one, especially not Cristina Yang, is typically the one who gets left behind like this!
New Wrinkles
Mommy Issues: An ailing Ellis returns to Seattle Grace. In a few hours of lucidity, she finds time to tell Meredith that she’s ordinary. It stings! Ellis dies shortly after. Meredith carries scars from her mother FOREVER.
Struggles with Father-Son Relationship: Following his father’s death at Seattle Grace, George experiences emotional turmoil. He impulsively marries Callie in Las Vegas, but later engages in infidelity by having an affair with Izzie while still married.
Farewell, Addison bid adieu to McDreamy and McSteamy and soared towards brighter horizons in California. Her spin-off, “Private Practice”, gained momentum during the third season of “Grey’s”. She remains dearly missed.
People to Know
Dr. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) explains: Meredith’s new intern is actually her half-sister, born from Thatcher and his wife Susan. For quite some time, Meredith had no interest in getting to know her. But rest assured, she eventually warms up to the idea!
Major Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd): Outstanding military trauma surgeon who makes his appearance in the fifth season opener, later becoming a regular at Seattle Grace. He lends a hand when Cristina is injured by an icicle (yes, this show has its quirks!), and their romantic relationship ignites swiftly and intensely from that point onward.
Relationship Watch (slash Breakup City)
Webber and Adele: Webber faces a difficult choice — work or his marriage. Sadly, his wife decides to leave him.
More Wrinkles
Summary: Derek shifts residence to Meredith’s home, but their partnership in a neuro clinical trial leads to disagreements and Derek claiming all the credit. This revelation that he has caused more deaths in surgeries than lives saved causes Derek to grapple with existential questions and neglect his personal grooming. Meanwhile, Callie harbors feelings for cardio surgeon Erica Hahn (Brooke Smith), but her hesitance eventually leads to Erica leaving Seattle. In an attempt to distract themselves from their feelings for others, Callie and Mark engage in a casual, emotionally charged relationship. Izzie begins experiencing Denny Duquette’s spirit, manifesting as intimate encounters.
Start here if: You stopped watching when Ghost Sex became a thing.
You are not alone. Thankfully, the show recovers! It gets good again!
Ghost Sex, Explained
Indeed, the mystery behind Ghost Sex is clarified: Izzie’s character has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. This isn’t ideal for her, but it provides an answer for those puzzled about the fate of this series.
Person to Know
Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw): A pediatric surgeon who often wears comfortable sneakers with bounce. She brings a lively energy to the scene, which is unusual for Grey’s Anatomy.
Must-See Episodes
“Rescuing Derek” (Season 5, Episode 19):
For those starting these episodes for the first time, let’s take a moment to remember us who had to wait an entire summer to find out about George (who sadly passes away) and Izzie (survives). While there are some joyful moments like Meredith and Derek’s wedding on a Post-It Note, it’s not all tear-jerking drama.
Relationship Watch
Mark and Lexie: They’re like Romeo and Juliet in Seattle Grace.
Start here if: You stopped watching after George died.
The body bags are really starting to pile up on this show.
Must-See Episode
In the sixth episode of Season 6, titled “‘I Saw What I Saw’“, Grey’s Anatomy showcases its daring approach by experimenting with its usual narrative structure.
New Wrinkles
Significant Play: The hospitals Seattle Grace and Mercy West combine to form Seattle Grace Mercy West, also referred to as Seattle Grace Mercy Fall. A number of fresh faces emerge, but focus on Jackson Avery (portrayed by Jesse Williams), a talented resident and the grandson of esteemed surgeon Harper Aver (he even has an award named after him!), and April Kepner (played by Sarah Drew), diligent and somewhat frustrating. Meanwhile, Webber relapses into alcoholism and is forced to relinquish his position as chief – Derek takes over. Bailey begins dating charming anesthesiologist Ben Warren (Jason George). In another turn of events, Meredith and Lexie’s father, Thatcher, who turned to drinking after his wife Susan unexpectedly passed away, requires a liver transplant – you might wonder which daughter is a match!
Farewell, Izzie: After an unfortunate incident with a patient, Izzie loses her job and departs from Seattle. She reappears later, but their marriage cannot be saved. Through this experience, Alex continues to grow and mature. This event also signifies Alex’s transition from specializing in plastic surgery to pediatrics. Oh, Alex! (or, Here’s wishing you a great journey ahead, Izzie: After a patient mishap that leads to her termination, Izzie bids farewell to Seattle. She returns later, but the marriage doesn’t survive. Through this relationship, Alex continues to develop and mature. This is also the point where Alex switches from working in plastic surgery to pediatrics. Isn’t that our Alex?)
People to Know
Dr. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver): She is a heart-lung specialist, having worked alongside Owen in Iraq. Their past and emotions are entwined in a complicated tapestry within their relationship.
Dr. Amelia Shepherd (portrayed by Caterina Scorsone) makes a guest appearance during season seven, but she’ll be back with a bigger role later on. She’s always striving to surpass her brother in her work as a neurosurgeon from the Shepherd family.
The Hospital Shooting
Titles: “Hospital Shooting” (Season 6, Episode 23) and “Consequences of Violence” (Season 6, Episode 24). These episodes are tough to sit through, but they significantly impact many characters moving forward. Meredith witnesses Derek getting shot by an enraged husband whose wife he had previously lost. He nearly dies and she experiences a miscarriage. Cristina is compelled to operate on Derek under threat of a gun, leading to PTSD that prevents her from operating for a long period. Alex narrowly escapes death due to a gunshot wound. April and Jackson grow closer after losing their two closest friends. Chief Webber finally takes charge as the leader we’re familiar with. It’s a traumatic experience for everyone, but Bailey’s ordeal might make you question why she ever returns to that hospital. After all, no one said watching Grey’s Anatomy was always enjoyable.
Relationship Watch
Meredith and Derek: They persistently attempt having a baby, but opt for adoption instead. They meet a child named Zola and develop strong feelings for her. By the way, they tie the knot at City Hall this time around.
The Musical Episode
Indeed, the whispers circulating are accurate: an episode of Grey’s Anatomy does indeed feature music! The 17th episode of Season 7, titled “Song Beneath the Song,” unfortunately, doesn’t live up to its potential. In a rather dramatic turn of events, a heavily pregnant Callie is involved in a car accident and, clinging to life, envisions everyone around her singing. Rather than sitting through the entire episode, consider watching Sara Ramirez delivering an outstanding rendition of “The Story” by Brandi Carlile (linked above). Her performance is exceptional, not in the sense that it would lead to losing a medical license or imprisonment, but rather in a way that leaves a lasting impression.
Start here if: You stopped watching after seeing your doctors sing in the OR.
A lot of people did not enjoy that.
Must-See Episodes
In “Dark Was the Night” (Episode 9) and “Suddenly” (Episode 10), if you’re following the Owen/Teddy storyline – a plot that resumes in Season 14 – you should catch this two-part episode where Henry’s health unexpectedly deteriorates. In this situation, Owen asks Cristina to perform surgery on him without revealing his identity. Unfortunately, Henry passes away, and Owen deceives Teddy about it until she finishes her own operation. By the end of the season, Teddy departs. However, in a more positive note: Meredith and Derek legally adopt Zola, making them not just our beloved Meredith and Derek, but Zola’s Mom and Dad officially!
New Wrinkles
Drama Rundown: Derek and Meredith’s Alzheimer’s clinical trial gets muddied up when it turns out that Adele Webber has Alzheimer’s (yes, her too) and Meredith messes with the integrity of the trial to help her. It ends the trial, puts a strain on their marriage, causes a rift in Meredith and Alex’s friendship (he turns her in!), and complicates Zola’s adoption. Cristina gets pregnant, but wants an abortion; Owen reluctantly agrees — but never gets over it. The residents take their boards — April is the only one who doesn’t pass, and she’s fired, but she loses her virginity to Jackson and they have VERY hot bathroom sex, so her experience is really a draw.
Person to Know
As a devoted cinephile, allow me to rephrase: I’m a die-hard urologist character named Dr. Catherine Avery, portrayed by Debbie Allen. In the storyline, I’m not only Jackson’s mother but also his lover—Richard, that is. Our romance blossoms while the residents are busy taking their board exams, adding an intriguing twist to the narrative.
The Crash
In an unexpected turn of events, the eighth season concludes with a devastating plane crash. A small charter plane carrying Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Arizona, Mark, and Lexie sets out to retrieve transplant organs but tragically crashes in the woods. The survivors endure days of hardship. During this time, Lexie declares her eternal love for Mark before she succumbs to her injuries. Arizona loses a limb, while Mark’s wounds eventually lead to his demise weeks later. Derek sustains severe damage to his hand, adding to the misery during this challenging period. Needless to say, things aren’t looking up.
Start here if: You stopped watching after the plane crash, when you couldn’t get Arizona’s screams out of your head.
Seriously, it was awful.

“Wedding Day Dilemma” (Season 9, Episode 10)
People to Know
Introducing the Interns: Here’s Jo, our street-smart one; Stephanie, our top performer; Shane, our hardcore colleague; Leah, who might seem a bit disorganized; and Heather, regrettably she won’t be with us past season 9.
Relationship Watch
Bailey and Ben: Bailey and Ben tie the knot and make an adorable couple!
Even More Drama
A Whirlwind of Events: Alex, upon the unexpected arrival of his abusive father, finds himself in turmoil. Meredith flourishes within her General Surgery specialty until she clashes with Cristina over a state-of-the-art 3D printer, aiming to revolutionize medicine and vie for the prestigious Harper Avery award. Ben departs his surgical residency in Los Angeles to reconnect with his spouse, transitioning into an internship at Grey Sloan. Bailey unknowingly infects multiple patients with MRSA, subsequently battling OCD. Amelia Shepherd relocates to Seattle!
Farewell Journey: After losing the Harper Avery award, Cristina finds out that Grey Sloan’s association with the Avery Foundation means no one from there can ever win. Preston Burke offers her a position to head his cardiothoracic institute in Zurich. Saying goodbye to Owen forever, she shares a last dance with Meredith and departs Seattle.
As a passionate moviegoer, here’s my take on the sentence you provided:
Another Must-See Episode
In “Get Up, Stand Up” (Episode 12 of Season 10), Jackson declares his affection for April during her wedding ceremony, reminiscent of Mark Sloan’s sentiments towards him. Derek is meant to be scaling back his work to allow Meredith to concentrate on her research, but receives a call from the president with an enticing job proposal instead. Meanwhile, fatigued and tormented by Heather’s demise, Shane operates on Alex’s father alone. The strain proves too much for Shane in the operating room, leading to a mental collapse and ultimately the passing of Alex’s father.
Vocab Lesson
#Japril refers to the nickname for Jackson and April’s romantic relationship, derived from their names. They elope instead of attending April’s wedding, later getting officially married. One issue that constantly challenges their union – she is deeply religious while he is not – quickly surfaces. To make matters more complicated, they find themselves expecting a child! This often seems to resolve issues in relationships, much like with Calzona (California + Arizona, the characters’ names).
Start here if: You stopped watching once Cristina left.
We get it, she was our favorite too.
Must-See Episode
“‘Only Mama Knows’ (Season 11, Episode 4):” Craving some insight into the life of Ellis Grey and her hidden child? Then you don’t want to miss this!
New Wrinkles
Recap: Maggie faces challenges to win Meredith’s favor. Amelia, who is a recovering drug addict and has issues with her brother, divides her time between Seattle and political matters in D.C. To demonstrate her competence as Head of Neurosurgery, Amelia tackles an extremely challenging case – removing a massive brain tumor from Dr. Herman’s (Geena Davis) mentor, the renowned neonatal surgical expert. She triumphs! Alex experiments with a private practice but eventually succumbs to his feelings for Grey Sloan Memorial and reunites with pediatrics alongside Arizona. Bailey steps into Cristina’s role on the board.
Relationship Watch
Meredith and Derek: Derek’s choice to focus on his brain-mapping project in Washington D.C. leads to a strain in their relationship. Eventually, he realizes that his family in Seattle is what truly matters to him. REGRETTABLY, THIS REALIZATION COMES TOO LATE.
Deadly Episode Watch
“In ‘How to Save a Life’ (Season 11, Episode 21):” It’s not exactly a choice, but we’re all in for the emotional rollercoaster that is Derek’s heart-wrenching death in a less-than-ideal hospital setting, following his heroic rescue of a group, and then getting hit by a semi truck.
Start here if: You stopped watching after McDreamy met his demise.
Occasionally, it’s hard to accept that it actually occurred, but let me share a little secret: the writing after Derek Grey on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is truly exceptional.
Must-See Episode
In “The Sound of Silence” (Season 12, Episode 9), I had the privilege of being directed by the legendary Denzel Washington. The story revolves around my character, Meredith, who endures a brutal attack from a patient, leaving her speechless for much of the episode.
New Wrinkles
Recap: Meredith disappears for a year due to grief over her husband’s death, only to reappear pregnant with their third child, Ellis. She moves back home with her mother and is later joined by Maggie and Amelia. Meredith resumes working in the OR, wearing a ferry boat scrub cap as a tribute to her late spouse. Catherine and Richard tie the knot, while Callie begins dating Penny, who cared for Derek when he passed away, causing some discomfort. After their return from military surgical training in Iraq, April and Owen attempt to reconcile their relationship (Japril), but they eventually divorce. In a twist, April announces she’s expecting again. What a tangled web!
Yes, Girl, Yes: Bailey is FINALLY named chief of surgery. It just feels right, doesn’t it?
Farewell, Safe Journey: Our beloved character Callie Torres departs us at the conclusion of season 12, joining Penny in New York City. We endure a difficult custody dispute between Callie and Arizona prior to her departure, but they manage to part ways on relatively amicable terms, given all the arguments.
People to Know
Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianotti), an intern with a captivating charm, develops a relationship with Maggie. Meanwhile, Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), a suave cardio surgeon who shared battlefield experiences with Owen and Teddy in Iraq, has a complicated past with the resident redhead. Their friendship ended due to a misunderstanding; Nathan was once engaged to Owen’s sister Megan, who disappeared in a helicopter accident. This tragic event strained their bond as both men grapple with feelings of guilt over moving on from Megan. Nathan and Meredith share an immediate connection!
Relationship Watch
Bailey and Ben: During a lockdown, Ben conducts an emergency C-section in the hallway, but the mother unfortunately dies. Bailey doesn’t support Ben, causing a significant rift between them.
Must-See Finale
In the 24th episode of Season 12, titled “Family Affair,” we witness Amelia and Owen’s wedding, which strengthens Meredith’s bond with Nathan due to shared past heartaches. The relationship dynamics among sisters (Meredith, Amelia, and Maggie) are also highlighted, while Alex slips back into his old habits, violently attacking DeLuca after misunderstanding a situation where the intern was found with a drunk Jo. However, I’d like to emphasize that this episode is truly exceptional because BEN WARREN performs an emergency cesarean section on APRIL KEPNER right in MEREDITH GREY’s kitchen table! Welcome aboard, Harriet Avery, to the thrilling world of Grey’s Anatomy!
Start here if: You stopped watching after the kitchen-table C-section.
Admittedly, it was a lot.
New Wrinkles
Summary: Alex faces felony assault charges, later dismissed. Jo’s past catches up with her as she is not Jo Wilson; instead, she is on the run from her abusive husband, Dr. Paul Stadler (Matthew Morrison). Maggie’s mother is diagnosed with breast cancer, which deeply affects her and brings her closer to Jackson, her mother’s surgeon. Jackson searches for his estranged father in Montana, only to realize he doesn’t need him. After a final encounter, Jackson and April’s romantic relationship ends (Rest In Peace #Japril). Amelia discloses that she gave birth to a baby with no brain while still an addict, and she decides not to have more children, leading to her separation from Owen. Later, Amelia learns she has a large, growing brain tumor, a dramatic twist to explain some of her erratic behavior (also, the tumor is removed successfully). Stephanie departs after a traumatic event involving a hospital rapist causing an explosion. Meredith and Riggs consummate their relationship in the backseat of an SUV; despite their frequent intimacy, this location is particularly significant.
Must-See Episode
“Who Survives, Who Fades Away, Who Recounts Your Legacy” (Season 14, Episode 7):
People to Know
Megan Hunt (Abigail Spencer): Indeed, you all — SHE’S ALIVE! After being held captive for a decade, she was discovered and transferred to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Meredith Gray is the one who urges Riggs to reconnect with his long-lost love, and it’s Meredith who devises an extraordinary surgical procedure to save Megan’s life. In no time, Megan and Riggs rekindle their love, and they decide to relocate to the sunny shores of California, where Megan has adopted a child during her captivity.
Tom Koracick, played by Greg Germann, is Amelia’s neurosurgeon mentor, known for his competitive streak against Derek (you can taste the rivalry!). He arrives to perform surgery on her tumor. It’s quite likely that he and Catherine Avery have shared more than just professional relationships at some point. Generally, he comes off as arrogant and dismissive towards others, but during a brief romance with April, we learn about his tragic past – he had a 10-year-old son who passed away in an unfortunate accident. Oh dear, it seems everyone on Grey’s Anatomy carries a heavy burden of pain and complexity within them.
Carina DeLuca, Andrew’s elder sister, travels from Italy for a research project on female orgasms at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Her presence often leaves her brother feeling awkward or embarrassed.
Introducing the Interns: Here’s Levi Schmitt, also known as Glasses, our well-intentioned but clumsy intern, then there’s Taryn Helm, smitten with Meredith, followed by Vikram Roy, who seems to have a penchant for lawsuits. Next up is Dahlia Qadri, a dedicated medical student with romantic feelings and academic achievements. Last but not least, we have Casey Parker, a brilliant IT specialist and transgender military officer, and lastly, Sam Bello, who shares a complex romantic past with DeLuca.
Relationship Watch
DeLuca and Sam: There seems to be strong emotional turmoil whenever these two are together, yet they can’t resist each other. Unfortunately, when they learn that ICE intends to deport Sam, who is a Dreamer, Sam is forced to leave the country, leaving DeLuca heartbroken.
More Wrinkles
In this narrative:
From Disillusionment to Determination: In a surprising turn of events, it’s revealed that the esteemed Harper Avery was less than noble, concealing numerous instances of sexual misconduct over three dozen times. The ensuing revelation leads to the dissolution of the Harper Avery Foundation. Jackson, with his substantial wealth, chooses to compensate the affected parties for their ordeal. Catherine, in a move of empowerment, reclaims her maiden name and establishes The Catherine Fox Foundation. Meredith, outraged by this unveiled truth, returns both her and her mother’s Harper Avery awards, signaling a stand against such unacceptable behavior.
Resolving Family Matters: Alex manages to reconcile with his mother who has bipolar disorder. He spent most of his childhood looking after her and his two siblings. Now that she’s on her medication and doing fine, they are taking steps towards healing. There’s still a long journey ahead, but this is a positive beginning!
Must-See Episode

“Reunited in the Frost” (Episode 23, Season 14)
And Some Good Things!
A Pleasant Conclusion: Following some amusing events, Alex and Jo get married by Meredith on a boat, while April and Matthew choose to wed immediately as well. This marks April Kepner’s grand exit from the series. Additionally, Arizona bids farewell as she moves to NYC to be with Sofia and single-again Callie. We’ll miss them, but at least they avoided being hit by a large truck! Meanwhile, Amelia and Owen exchange affectionate glances, and Meredith receives an unintentional kiss from DeLuca while he’s under the influence.
Hello there! It seems like Teddy Altman has made a comeback, and this time, she’s carrying Owen’s child! Quite an exciting turn of events, wouldn’t you agree?
Start here if: You stopped watching when forced to say good-bye to Arizona and April.
Very uncool, Grey’s.
People to Know
Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack) is: Described as an Orthopedic specialist extraordinaire, he enters dramatically in slow motion, a portrayal that accurately reflects his status. It’s also true that he knew Jo prior to her transformation into “Jo” – they used to work together under the name “Brooke.” Link, who fought bone cancer as a child, found inspiration to become both a surgeon and an optimist due to this experience. He even goes so far as to cut his handsome hair to comfort children. Indeed, he is flawless in every way.
Dr. Nico Kim (Alex Landi): All orthopedic surgeons are hotties with bodies, according to Grey’s Anatomy; bless this show. Nico is Link’s ortho fellow and during his first surgery at Grey Sloan, he winks at Schmitt from across the OR. A bold move!
Relationship Watch
Meredith and DeLuca: Neither of them can get the memory of that drunken kiss out of their minds, yet DeLuca must win Meredith’s affections amidst a love triangle with Link. Indeed, he manages to do so. Meredith is hesitant to fully commit to another man after her past experiences, but she finds herself powerless against her feelings.
Bailey and Ben: The demands of Ben’s firefighter job and Bailey’s work-related stress become overwhelming, leading to a temporary break in their relationship. Despite this longer-than-expected pause, they remain dedicated to each other for the long term. They are more passionate than ever!
Amelia and Owen: Oh dear, they keep trying to rekindle things between them, only to find that they’re not a good fit once more. It seems that Owen’s affection lies with Teddy.
As for Teddy and Tom: Ah, Tom, despite being the ideal boyfriend for Teddy, you’re unintentionally caught in the whirlwind of Owen and Teddy’s relationship. Yet, isn’t it intriguing that Teddy has seldom laughed as much as she does now? And who on this show can claim such hearty laughter?
It appears that Teddy and Owen are destined to be together, with a child on the way. Despite Teddy being in a secure relationship with Tom, she has never experienced love like she does for Owen. After some helpful therapy, Owen acknowledges that he has been unintentionally damaging his relationship with Teddy. As Alison is born, Owen vows to demonstrate his love for her throughout their lives. Whether they will manage to stay together or continue to hurt each other remains uncertain, it’s a coin toss really.
Amelia and Link: Initially, they appear to be two individuals coping with discomfort together, but it’s revealed that they have an exceptional compatibility. Additionally, Link displays remarkable resilience by enduring a dinner with all the Shepherd women.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but share the thrilling revelation: Finally, Schmitt reveals his feelings, and their connection intensifies dramatically, reminiscent of two lovers embracing amidst the chaos of a storm in an ambulance – passion personified!
It appears that things were generally smooth sailing for the couple, Jackson and Maggie, until Maggie referred to Jackson as “Mr. Monopoly,” suggesting his privilege may hinder him from grasping everyday realities. In response, Jackson seemed to express a desire for Maggie to have a different character or personality. Put simply, their exchange was rather unfortunate.

“Silent All These Years” – Season 15, Episode 19: This might be the most challenging Grey’s Anatomy episode to endure throughout its 15 seasons, yet it carries great significance. Jo discovers her birth mother and learns that she was conceived through a heinous act of rape. This revelation propels Jo into a deeply troubling journey, as she simultaneously cares for a patient who has experienced assault. The episode is as emotionally draining and intense as the title suggests.
New Wrinkles
Experiencing Emotional Turmoil as a Movie Critic: In this gripping narrative, I find myself deeply engrossed by the tumultuous journey of a character named Jo. Upon uncovering the truth about her parents, she spirals into emotional distress that jeopardizes both her marriage and career. Eventually, she bravely chooses to take a break, seeking solace and professional help. In a poignant moment before his demise, Meredith shares a touching conversation with Thatcher, leaving a lasting impression of sorrow and healing.
From Fired to Foe: My Journey at Pac-North: Following my dismissal from Grey Sloan, I found myself taking up the mantle of Chief of Surgery at a shabby, dilapidated, perhaps even ghostly Pac-North Hospital. In an attempt to revive this establishment, I brought on board my trusted ally, Richard. We embarked on a challenging mission to restore the hospital’s former glory. However, tension between Richard and Catherine escalated when he felt betrayed by her silence during my termination. To assert dominance, she retaliated by purchasing Pac-North, humiliating him by shutting it down, and compelling his return to Grey Sloan. Later, even after Richard’s near-fatal cobalt poisoning, he remained adamantly distant from Catherine. This situation is a real rollercoaster ride!
Must-See Episodes
“Meredith’s Appeal” (Season 16, Episode 8): Meredith confronts the medical board to preserve her license following insurance fraud incidents. Alex enlists aid from old acquaintances and past patients, who pen letters and attend personally to testify before the board. This episode is rich with significant references for long-term fans and an unexpected link to Derek’s demise.
“Alex Returns” (Season 16, Episode 16)
Relationship Watch
Meredith, DeLuca, and Hayes: A minor strain exists between Mer and DeLuca due to his perception of disrespect and inequality in their relationship. However, this tension escalates significantly when he refuses to acknowledge his bipolar disorder, despite others recognizing it clearly. Now enters Cormac Hayes, the charismatic Irish head of pediatrics, who is both a widower and a father. He could potentially be the complex and mysterious figure Meredith requires.
The story unfolds as Teddy and Owen plan their engagement, yet Teddy struggles to let go of her part-time partner, Tom. As she stands at the altar, eager to declare her love for Owen, everything comes to a halt when Owen listens to a voice message revealing that Tom has sent an intimate wedding present – in the form of a physical gift – to Teddy on their big day.
Jackson and Maggie: It’s surprising how quickly these two part ways in Season 16. Jackson finds a new connection with firefighter Vic Hughes from Station 19, but their relationship doesn’t last until the end of the season. On the other hand, Maggie encounters an old acquaintance, Winston Ndugu, from her professional past, and it seems there could be more than just a passing interest between them.
Schmitt and Nico: Sorry, people. This couple is splitsville.
In the early stages of their relationship, Amelia becomes pregnant, and for some time, she declines to take a paternity test (it might be Owen’s). Later on, they discover that the child is Link’s, and by the time their son arrives, Amelia and Link are in a strong and harmonious state.
Bailey and Ben: Bailey and Ben experience an emotional roller-coaster: They feel immense joy when Bailey becomes unexpectedly pregnant, suffer the heartbreaking loss of a miscarriage, and ultimately welcome a foster child into their lives. They truly embody compassion and resilience.
The Pandemic
During a period when TV series were pondering the most effective approach to portray COVID-19 (if they chose to do so), “Grey’s Anatomy” took a bold stance. Set in Seattle, the show initially appeared ideally positioned to delve into various aspects of the pandemic – the impact on frontline workers, the revelation of healthcare disparities and biases, the exasperation over the politicization of a lethal virus. However, after some time, the narrative becomes rather tedious.
Despite the ongoing pandemic, Grey Sloan Hospital experiences significant transformations: Teddy experiences a mental breakdown, finds closure concerning her late lover Alison, and eventually reconciles with Owen, leading to their engagement. It’s been quite an adventure! In the interim, Maggie and Winston tie the knot, Jo adopts a child of one of her deceased patients, Bailey loses her mother to COVID-19 and manages Ben’s testicular cancer (he recovers!), both Webber and Catherine reunite, as do Nico and Schmitt, and Amelia heartbreakingly declines Link’s proposal because he yearns for more children, which she categorically does not. That fellow is going to be quite distraught for a while.
Vocab Lesson
Death Beach: This term is not used in the show but serves as a convenient shorthand for fans to refer to where the main character, Meredith, spent most of Season 17 during her struggle with COVID-19. As Meredith fluctuates between consciousness and unconsciousness, she envisions herself on a tranquil beach where various spirits from Grey’s Anatomy Past appear, including her cherished partner Derek Shepherd whose hair remains immaculate. Unfortunately, this dreamlike state persists for too long, and by the end of the season, you may find yourself swearing at that enchanting yet disconcerting place. To get a glimpse of Death Beach without having beaches spoiled for you permanently, watch “You’ll Never Walk Alone” (Season 17, Episode 4), where Meredith encounters George O’Malley and finally resolves some long-standing issues with him.
It’s So Hard to Say Good-bye
In the midst of the pandemic, season 17 cast off several major characters including:
Jackson Avery: The inequity within medicine in regards to race and gender has never been more apparent than during the pandemic, and Jackson realizes that with the Catherine Fox Foundation he actually has the power and resources to do something about it. Jackson decides to take his place as head of the foundation in Boston, and he wants April and Harriet to come with him. Luckily, April and Matthew have split because hello, everyone knew that marriage was a truly terrible idea, and April agrees to go. That’s right, against all odds, #Japril is endgame. #Japril shippers should feast their eyes upon “Look Up Child” (Season 17, Episode 14).
Tom Koracick: After Tom’s intense and emotional struggle with COVID-19, he lost six roommates, all men of color, which made him question the current situation. Moved by Jackson, he decides to contribute his skills to the Avery and Catherine Fox Foundation in Boston. However, rest assured, he also purchases Jo’s hospital shares (a gift from Alex) when Jo requires funds for adopting Luna. This news leaves Bailey displeased, as Tom now owns a part of the hospital and may unexpectedly drop by.
Andrew DeLuca’s Predicament: Grey’s Anatomy portrays Andrew as experiencing a mental breakdown while attempting to apprehend a child sex trafficker, who is initially disbelieved due to his erratic behavior. He then works on managing his bipolar disorder, appearing healthier and happier than ever. However, the same child sex trafficker resurfaces, leading him to pursue her once more, ultimately resulting in his own tragic demise. Yet, Grey’s Anatomy, why? Why put Andrew through such a harrowing ordeal?
Start here if: You stopped watching when Grey’s put its lead in a coma for an entire season.
It gave the whole thing a real stall-for-time type of energy, you know?
Relationship Watch
Meredith and Nick Marsh: Absolutely, you’re right! That transplant doctor Meredith rescued in season 14? It’s the same one she runs into while she’s working on curing Parkinson’s in Minnesota during season 18. They have a strong connection between them! Yes, Nick follows Meredith around quite a bit as she prioritizes her work over him, and there was even that instance where she feigned a poor phone connection to avoid responding to his declaration of love. I must admit, that wasn’t ideal. However, let me assure you, Meredith truly does care for him deeply!
Amelia and Kai: A sense of excitement is brewing in Minnesota: Amelia collaborates on the Parkinson’s project with Meredith and encounters neuroscientist Dr. Kai Bartley (E.R. Fightmaster). Their relationship almost fades away due to Kai’s reluctance towards having children, but it seems they simply can’t stay apart.
Jo and Link: They’ve been telling everyone they’re just good friends, but the truth is, their affection for each other is so profoundly deep that it’s almost awkward. (or)
In a subsequent incident, Schmitt experiences a mental collapse due to his overconfidence and Webber’s lenient supervision in the residency program, which results in him accidentally killing a podcaster during surgery. As a result, Schmitt and Nico end their relationship once more, with Nico deciding to depart from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital permanently.
Reviewing “Maggie and Winston”: In this gripping romantic drama, I found myself deeply invested in the tumultuous relationship of the newlywed couple, Maggie and Winston. The arrival of Winston’s brother Wendell, played by Rome Flynn, stirred up a whirlwind of chaos as he swindled them out of twenty grand and further complicated matters when Maggie began treating Winston, a skilled surgeon, like an underling. To add fuel to the fire, Winston proposed they give up cardio surgery in an attempt to save their marriage, only for Maggie to express her lack of respect for him. Quite a challenging hurdle to overcome, I must say! The tension between these two is palpable, making for a riveting watch.
Jackson and April: Shock! These characters aren’t recurring on the show anymore, but they make an appearance during Catherine’s cancer ordeal (more details forthcoming). This is to clarify that in Boston, they did rekindle their relationship and are deeply in love. If you’re a supporter of #Japril, this is wonderful news for you. If you’re not, kindly focus on other aspects of the storyline!
Must-See Episode
“You Are the Blood” (Season 18, Episode 20)

The Grey Sloan Exodus
Indeed, numerous individuals came and went during seasons 18 and 19 at Grey Sloan Memorial, but it’s astonishing how many doctors decided to depart. Remarkably, no major catastrophe triggered their exits. In truth, I applaud them for making a wise choice. It seems that more individuals should consider escaping this seemingly dangerous institution.
Known alternatively as McWidow (not the most flattering nickname on Grey’s Anatomy), Cormac’s tenure at Grey Sloan comes to an end when he determines that he won’t continue to conceal Owen’s clandestine activity, which involves assisting veterans in passing away with dignity through euthanasia. Given this practice is generally disapproved of, and Cormac having no desire to serve prison time or see Owen imprisoned, he elects to return to Ireland instead.
Richard and Catherine: Richard unintentionally causes a crisis at Grey Sloan Hospital’s residency program by implementing the Webber Method: Residents can perform surgeries without supervision to a certain extent, but it ends disastrously – the program is shut down temporarily. Following Catherine’s recovery from cancer, they decide to embark on an extended vacation and explore the world. Fortunately, their break lasts only through summer, as Webber and Catherine reappear in season 19. During this season, Catherine learns that her cancer has returned and progressed further.
As a dedicated admirer, I’d put it like this: After a tumultuous year marked by physician shortages and blood scarcity, I, much like a weary warrior, have decided to step aside and pass my chief’s keys to Meredith. However, when the call to arms for reproductive healthcare rights echoes, I find myself standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Addison Montgomery. The once-shuttered Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic now bears a new name – the Elena Bailey Memorial Clinic for Reproductive Health – a testament to my unwavering commitment to this cause.
Owen and Teddy: Following Owen being threatened due to his part in facilitating unqualified patients’ assisted deaths among physicians, they both swiftly depart Seattle with their children for a temporary period as fugitives. Hard to imagine! They resurface in season 19 when the criminal accusations are dismissed. It puts a strain on their marriage, but then again, what relationship doesn’t?
As a Fan: It’s undeniably bittersweet when Meredith, recognizing Zola’s brilliance and linking her panic attacks to insufficient intellectual stimulation at school, seeks a more enriching environment for her daughter – right here in Boston. Leaving Seattle and Grey Sloan Memorial midway through season 19 is indeed hard, but Meredith isn’t completely absent from the series; she’s merely taking a brief hiatus… to fight Alzheimer’s at the Fox Foundation, no big deal. To top it off, they even torch her house as a final, heart-wrenching farewell present. Quite considerate!
Congratulations! You’re Having … Baby Surgeons!
Time for a fresh start! Just before moving on, Meredith revitalizes the Grey Sloan residency program by recruiting promising candidates from less competitive pools. Let’s welcome the new interns to our hospital family!
Response: Apologies for any confusion, but let me clarify that the character you’re referring to is Lucas Adams, who happens to be Derek’s beloved nephew and somewhat of a black sheep in the family. He’s prone to self-sabotage, and his initial attraction to Simone Griffith could stir some trouble, as you’ll soon discover.
It appears that Simone Griffith carries a strong resemblance to Meredith Grey. Tragedy struck early in her life at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital when her mother passed away during childbirth, her grandmother is suffering from dementia, and she was expelled from her previous residency program for challenging racial discrimination within the hospital. Despite a growing connection with Lucas, Simone harbors emotional baggage following the termination of her engagement. It’s only a matter of time before her former fiancé resurfaces and stirs up complications.
Mika is part of a big household, needing to earn a living for herself as well as her parents. Occasionally, she resides in a campervan!
Jules Millin begins her time at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital by following an old tradition where interns engage in relationships with senior staff members, such as Atticus Lincoln, in this case. Born to counterculture parents who were involved in drug dealing, she is often overlooked and underestimated. During her stint as an intern, she embarks on a romantic involvement with another intern named Benson Kwan.
Benson “Blue” Kwan: Similar to Alex Karev, Kwan has a rough exterior but hides a tender heart, particularly towards single mothers and their children, as well as those burdened with significant medical bills – a sensitivity that stems from his own high school experiences caring for his ailing mother.
Start here if: You also parted ways with Seattle when Meredith Grey made her exit
You know what? Good for her. It’s honestly a miracle the woman made it out of that city alive. And good for us, too: She may not live in Seattle anymore, but Mer is always popping in and out of Grey’s Anatomy. Sometimes it’s as if she never left!
The Latest Drama
Following the conclusion of Grey’s Anatomy, events progress smoothly. Teddy Altman assumes the role of chief-of-surgery, demonstrating exceptional competence. To prevent Mika from exhaustion due to financial strain, she revises the residency program. When the Reproductive Health Clinic is targeted by protesters, Teddy proves herself as a resilient and trusted leader. The anti-abortion activists, causing distress in Addison’s life as she aids those affected by strict abortion bans, eventually expose Bailey’s details. Despite this, Bailey stands firm in her commitment to women’s healthcare and even earns a Catherine Fox Award from it. Nick, who enjoys managing the residency program, but loves Meredith Grey more, ultimately departs for Boston, placing Miranda “I Have Five Rules” Bailey in charge. This change feels perfectly suitable. Shortly after, Maggie also departs Seattle to accept a prestigious position in Chicago, leading to her divorce from Winston. Just as other cardio deities before her, surgery was always Maggie’s truest love.
Must-See Episodes
“Wedding Bell Blues” and “Happily Ever After?” (Season 19, Episodes 19 and 20)
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=4t__JgECYRk
The 19th season seems to have revitalized the series as if it were starting anew, which is quite remarkable given that it’s ongoing! And nothing showcases this rejuvenation better than its climactic two-episode conclusion. There aren’t any massive spectacles or catastrophic events, but it has a vintage feel of excellent Grey’s storytelling. For instance, Simone flees her wedding and finds herself in Lucas’s arms; Meredith and Nick rekindle their romance in Boston with a touch of sweetness; Jo and Link finally confess their feelings for each other and share a passionate rain-soaked kiss; a patient we’ve grown attached to deteriorates, causing the interns to rebel in an unsuccessful attempt to save him; Teddy collapses during surgery, and Owen springs into action to restart her heart before the credits roll. Truly, a finale that wraps up with grand romantic gestures and an operating room awash in blood? That’s pure Grey’s Anatomy at its best!
Relationship Watch
Kai and Amelia: Oh dear, it seems that Kai has the opportunity to leave Amelia – a dream job in London presents itself, leading Kai to prioritize career over affection. This leaves Amelia heartbroken.
At the close of season 19, Jo and Link ultimately put an end to their indecisive behavior and openly express their feelings towards each other. The will-they, won’t-they conundrum is now resolved! However, new complications arise when, shortly after choosing to wait a while before having more children together, Jo discovers she’s pregnant unexpectedly.
Simone and Lucas: The angst! The chemistry! Uncle Derek would be proud, to be honest. Simone’s ex Trey returns, and she accepts his proposal but realizes she only has eyes for Lucas at the exact moment she is walking down the aisle. It’s a runaway-bride situation! While they do immediately have sex in an on-call room (bless!), there’s just something about cutting into a patient who bleeds out all over the OR floor that puts a damper on true romance. After Simone tells Lucas she needs to focus on herself (he does not take it well), it’s not long before she’s rallying the troops to stand up to Catherine Fox as she decides whether Lucas has to repeat his intern year: Simone knows that if this happens, Lucas will surely head off to Chicago to take a job offer from Maggie Pierce, and she can’t stomach losing him.
Jules, Kwan, and Mika: The duo of Jules and Kwan insist their tumultuous relationship is purely physical, however, it’s evident that emotions are deeply intertwined. As the season progresses to its 20th episode, Mika breaks up with her co-resident and boss, Taryn Helm, which seems to spark feelings between Jules and Mika. Meanwhile, Kwan is thrown off balance when his former fiancée Molly, who suffered amnesia from a car crash, appears at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and gives him an unusual sense of familiarity. In truth, it’s unclear where this love triangle will lead in the future.
After finalizing his divorce, Winston finds himself entangled romantically with the recently arrived pediatric surgeon in town, Dr. Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales). Here’s an interesting twist: Monica is also involved in a playful, intuitive relationship with Winston’s ex-almost sister-in-law, Amelia.
Meredith consistently challenges Nick, but when he repeatedly demonstrates his commitment and desire to join her in their shared chaos, she makes a significant move: She submits an offer for the house Nick has always dreamed of in Boston, aiming to establish them as a genuine full-time family. What a fantastic move from Meredith!
One Very Large Wrinkle
Meredith has a terrible track record with Alzheimer’s research, doesn’t she? When Catherine Fox shuts down Meredith’s study into the correlation between the gut microbiome and Alzheimer’s because this new hypothesis goes against decades of accepted theories on the disease and it could be disastrous for the reputation of the Fox Foundation, Mer continues her work behind Catherine’s back with an assist from Amelia and some secret funding from Teddy. It all blows up at the end of season 20, and Catherine fires Meredith, Amelia, Teddy, and even Owen for standing up to her on behalf of his wife. That’s a lot of fired doctors — and that’s before Miranda Bailey tells Catherine she’ll walk if Catherine doesn’t save Lucas Adams’s job. Suffice it to say, Grey Sloan Memorial could look very different in season 21.
Bravo! You’ve finished your rapid-fire course on Grey’s Anatomy! Go ahead and dance or have a tequila toast, as you should feel self-assured enough to stride into season 20 like an experienced Grey’s expert. Yet, keep in mind: The intriguing tale of Seattle’s medical professionals is vast, and unexpected characters may still appear through the hospital’s doors – even some who’ve long since passed!
