Leonardo DiCaprio & Martin Scorsese’s First Film in 3 Years Gets New Production Update

I just heard some exciting news about Leonardo DiCaprio‘s next movie! Apparently, things are really moving forward with production, and it sounds like he’s taking a big swing with the genre this time. It’ll be his first film in three years, so the anticipation is definitely building!

Martin Scorsese has finished filming his new psychological horror movie, What Happens at Night, according to industry source Puck. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, and it’s the seventh time DiCaprio has worked with Scorsese as director.

What Is Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night All About?

After a three-year gap since their critically acclaimed film, Killers of the Flower Moon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are embarking on their most challenging project to date: a true horror movie. Though they’ve touched on elements of the genre before, particularly with the 2010 psychological thriller Shutter Island, this will be their first full-fledged horror film. DiCaprio actually started his career with a low-budget sci-fi horror called Critters 3 in 1991, but this is the first time he’s returned to the genre since becoming a major star.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, with a script by Patrick Marber based on Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel, the film centers on a married couple—referred to only as The Man and The Woman—who relocate from America to a peaceful town in Europe, hoping to adopt a child.

According to the description, the story takes place at the massive Borgarfjarðarsýsla Grand Imperial Hotel, a place where the bar never closes and the lobby is full of mysterious people. In this strange, icy setting, things aren’t what they appear to be, and a couple’s fight to reclaim their baby leads them to question everything – their relationship, who they are, and even the meaning of life.

Joining Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in the film are Louis Cancelmi as Brother Emmanuel, Gabriel Spahiu as the Taxi Driver, and Jared Harris, Welker White, Ilinca Manolache, Patrick Plajzer, and Patricia Clarkson, who all have undisclosed roles.

What’s Next for the Stars of What Happens at Night?

Before the release of her new film, What Happens at Night – currently slated for next year – Jennifer Lawrence will return to a hugely popular franchise by reprising her famous role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

In December, it was officially announced that Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will return as Katniss and Peeta in the next Hunger Games movie. This film, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, will connect directly to the previous story (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) while also acting as a prequel to the original series. The movie is set over twenty years before Katniss first volunteered, and Lawrence and Hutcherson are expected to appear in scenes that show what happened to their characters later in life.

Haymitch Abernathy, played by Woody Harrelson, is a former District 12 tribute who later becomes Katniss’s mentor. The new film, Sunrise on the Reaping, also features Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, a District 12 tribute who originally owned the Mockingjay pin – an item that would eventually become a symbol of rebellion.

Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a new movie with Christian Bale, and it will be directed by Martin Scorsese. The film is set in Hawaii during either the 1960s or 1970s and marks another collaboration between DiCaprio and Scorsese.

What Happens at Night does not currently have a set release date.
