Nigerian politician claiming to be 30 withdraws after allegations he is actually a child

A candidate running for office who said he was a 30-year-old man with dwarfism has dropped out of the race. This came after documents appeared suggesting he is actually a 15-year-old boy.

Mahmud Sadis Buba of Kaduna State, Nigeria, is running for a seat in the Nigerian House of Representatives in the 2027 election. The 30-year-old member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) wants to serve the people of the Sabon Gari Federal Constituency.

When people commented on his young looks, Buba explained that he had dwarfism. This led to endearing nicknames like ‘The Wonder of Zaria/Zazzau’, which playfully combined his small stature with his aspirations for political office.

Documents challenge age claims

According to reports from The Whistler, documents have surfaced online – including a birth certificate, passport, national ID, and school records – that suggest he was born in 2010. He had previously stated he was born in 1995. If the documents are accurate, he would have been only 15 years old during the screening process for the APC.

Recent reports suggest discrepancies in Buba’s stated age. A former teacher claimed Buba was around 15 years old, but a family member revealed he was born in 2010 and had been using his older brother’s identification to appear older.

The official verification of the documents is still pending. However, after significant public urging and discussions with his political allies, family, and party members, Buba has decided to drop out of the 2027 election he had planned to compete in.

This situation has led to a lot of questions for the APC about how thoroughly it vets candidates. Many are asking how someone managed to mislead the party and advance so far in the process.
