Overwatch 2 Players Once Again Shine a Spotlight on Sombra, Demanding Nerfs

As a seasoned Overwatch 2 gamer with countless hours under my belt, I can’t help but share my frustration with the current state of Sombra. It seems like every time she pops up on the enemy team, it’s akin to inviting a digital Grinch to steal Christmas – or in this case, our hard-earned points.

In Overwatch 2, Sombra is often a character who sparks debate among players, mainly due to her unique set of skills. On one hand, she’s intellectually engaging, but on the other, her abilities such as invisibility and virus combination can be quite annoying, especially when a proficient player uses them to eliminate your team’s support group. With Season 12 starting and the game’s meta settling down, Sombra has once more become a target for players’ criticisms.

A significant number of players, even those in the competitive community, have been vocal about their ongoing dissatisfaction with Sombra, urging Blizzard to either weaken her abilities or reconsider a total overhaul. Let’s delve deeper and understand why Overwatch 2 enthusiasts are so resolute about wanting Sombra weakened.

Sombra isn’t typically seen as too powerful, yet when faced with an expert player using her skills, it may feel unjust. This is because Sombra’s abilities, particularly hacking and the virus combo, can appear extremely difficult to combat effectively.

Experiencing frequent hacking, viruses, and immediate deletion has become an all-too-common ordeal in Overwatch 2, a situation that most players, including myself, find neither enjoyable nor equitable. It’s challenging not to let out a wistful sigh when she shows up on the opposing team (a subtle nod to my wordplay).

Beyond just casual gamers, there’s a growing dislike for Sombra that extends to prominent streamers like Jay3, who’ve excluded her from his Overwatch 2 challenge events. Similarly, the CompetitiveOverwatch subreddit has seen an influx of posts expressing annoyance about her.

One post, in particular, captures many of the community’s complaints. As a tank player, I can relate to the sentiment: “I’m tired of playing tank against a character that can just wait and press a zero-skill button to completely disrupt my plays. It requires the reactions of an F1 driver to interrupt and is on such a short cooldown she can just try again anyway in a few seconds.”

The other player expresses their frustration by saying, “I’m fed up with constantly playing a support role against a character who can easily reach the backline without any effort, then all I need is a momentary pause for them to deal significant damage with virus+clip.” They continue, “I’m tired of her having an escape mechanism as soon as she’s under pressure. In theory, it should be trackable, but skilled Sombras usually have their escape route strategized, making it difficult to predict where they will go.

This feedback underscores the main problem: although Sombra can be outmaneuvered by experienced players, they find it more like a tedious task instead of an exciting struggle. One player succinctly expresses this sentiment: “I can go up against her, I can thwart her attacks, I can occasionally defeat her, but when that’s all I’m doing throughout the entire game, it’s incredibly monotonous and definitely not enjoyable.

Although there is some frustration, certain players continue to maintain optimism. One user commented, “I concur and I suspect the developers are aware of it as well, thankfully. At present, I’m giving Sombra a bit of leeway because the developers have hinted at another rework for her, without guaranteeing permanent Invisibility.

There’s a solid basis for this optimism since developers have previously talked about addressing Sombra’s weaknesses. With the current meta settling down, D.Va’s dominance being handled, and tank equilibrium reestablished, it seems like an ideal moment for Blizzard to implement those adjustments.
