10 Kingdom Hearts 3 Characters Who Are More Important Than Players Realize

As a huge Kingdom Hearts fan, I was so excited for Kingdom Hearts 3, knowing it was supposed to wrap up the story after almost 20 years! But wow, there are so many characters. Seriously, you’ll see faces pop up from games you didn’t even know were part of the series! It’s amazing, but honestly, the story gets really complicated. They throw a lot of new ideas at you, and it can be tough to keep track of everything that’s going on.

The game’s unusual storytelling, frankly, isn’t very clear. This means many characters are introduced without enough explanation of their role in the larger Kingdom Hearts story. If you’ve only played the main numbered games, you’ll probably need to look up these characters online to understand who they are and why they matter.

Today, we’re looking at characters from Kingdom Hearts 3 who are surprisingly important – more so than many players might think. This includes characters who’ve been quietly significant throughout the series, as well as villains who seem poised to play a bigger role down the line. Several characters in the game’s cast are arguably more crucial to the overall story than it appears.

Since Kingdom Hearts 4 seems like a fresh start for the series, we’re predicting which 10 characters will likely return in the new game.

10. Donald Duck

Donald has been a reliable friend throughout the Kingdom Hearts series. Despite often being defeated early in boss fights or accidentally hit by Goofy’s magic, he secretly acts as Mickey’s powerful mage. This hidden talent allows him to perform incredible feats, including one that surpasses anything seen from any other character in both the Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy games.

The group quickly found themselves trapped in the Keyblade Graveyard, facing certain defeat by Terra-Xehanort. In a desperate attempt to turn the tide, Donald unleashed Zettaflare, an incredibly powerful spell, seemingly sacrificing himself in the process. The spell was so strong it reduced Terra-Xehanort to a helpless state. Although Sora later used time travel to undo the damage, it clearly showed that Donald is a much more capable fighter than he often appears.

9. Demyx

I don’t love that important story details for Kingdom Hearts are often hidden in the spin-off games, but they did use those games to reveal the past lives of most of the members of Organization XIII. The one exception is Demyx – his original identity is still a mystery.

Demyx was often treated as comic relief in earlier Kingdom Hearts games, so his boss fight in Kingdom Hearts 2 came as a shock – and a frustrating one for many players. When he reappeared as a villain in Kingdom Hearts 3, fans braced themselves for another difficult battle with his signature “Dance, Water, Dance” attack. Luckily, that didn’t happen! Instead, Demyx unexpectedly withdrew from the fight in a funny, cowardly moment. However, some fans believe this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him, and that his true identity might be connected to the series’ next big villain.

8. Luxord

It’s clear that many of the characters on this list are former members of Organization XIII. Kingdom Hearts 3 unfortunately doesn’t offer much closure for these villains, leading us to believe their stories will continue in future installments. A prime example is Luxord, who, like Demyx and Xigbar, is left in an ambiguous situation. We don’t learn anything new about who Luxord really is, and his motivations remain as unclear as they were before the game even started.

During their last meeting, Luxord gives Sora a special card, promising it will give him an advantage in battle. While players might have expected Sora to use it before the game ended, it never appears again. This strongly suggests the card will be important in a future game, and could potentially be the key to helping Sora escape his current situation.

This also makes us wonder how Luxord managed to trap such strong magic inside one of his cards, and even more surprisingly, how he knew Sora might need it later on. Hopefully, the game’s creator, Nomura, remembers this detail and will explain it in the next installment, as fans have been discussing it for over five years now.

7. Xigbar / Luxu

Xigbar quickly became a popular character after appearing in Kingdom Hearts 2. He had everything fans look for: a memorable and challenging boss fight, a likable personality, a unique look, and a high rank within the Organization. It’s therefore not surprising that people were excited to see him return as a villain in Kingdom Hearts 3.

Okay, so Xigbar always felt like he was holding back, like he knew way more than he was letting on, and it seemed he was working with Xehanort because he wanted to, not because he had to. The weirdest part was after our final fight – he didn’t just vanish into darkness like most villains. He literally jumped off a cliff! As a Star Wars nerd, I immediately thought, ‘no body, no death,’ and boy, was I right. Turns out, Xigbar was actually Luxu, one of the very first Keyblade wielders, and a big part of what started the whole Keyblade War in the first place. Mind blown!

Whether we’ll see Luxu again is uncertain, as the game’s creator, Nomura, has suggested the Foretellers might not be in the next installment. Still, I think Luxu could return as a go-between for them, appearing later in the series to reveal important story details.

6. Vanitas

Vanitas appears as a villain in Kingdom Hearts 3, and if you’re not familiar with the game Birth By Sleep, you might be confused by this character who looks like Sora. He’s not simply an evil version of Sora, but actually the embodiment of darkness within Ventus’s heart.

This darkness was the source of the Unversed, enemies in the game similar to the Heartless. Xehanort extracted this darkness from Ventus and shaped it into these creatures, who you’ll face throughout the game. This process also allowed Xehanort to create the X-blade, connecting his past to the ancient Keyblade War.

The connection between Vanitas and Ventus is a popular fan theory attempting to explain why Sora was selected as the Keyblade wielder. Because of this, any scene or moment shared between them feels especially significant.

5. Yozora

Tetsuya Nomura is determined to bring his vision for Final Fantasy XIII Versus to life, and it looks like elements of it will appear in Kingdom Hearts 4, though not exactly as originally planned.

Okay, so Yozora in Kingdom Hearts 3… wow. He’s seriously the hardest boss in the whole series, even tougher than Sephiroth or The Lingering Will! It’s crazy because he first shows up as this little cameo in the Toy Story world – it looks like just a funny scene where the toys are playing a game. But it turns out it was a huge hint about where Sora’s story would eventually lead! I definitely didn’t see that coming!

Once Yozora is defeated, a scene plays showing the character traveling in a limousine through a city that looks like Shibuya. It mirrors a similar moment with Sora, where the character reflects on strange feelings and wonders about what the future holds.

Considering everything that’s been established, it’s almost certain this character will appear in Kingdom Hearts 4. Hopefully, we won’t have to battle them again, though!

4. Yen Sid

Yen Sid is a classic, long-standing Disney character, so many fans are surprised by his limited role in the Kingdom Hearts games. However, he’s still a very important figure in shaping the series’ story and world.

Yen Sid is a lot like Yoda in the Kingdom Hearts series – he’s a wise, older figure who explains important plot points and offers guidance to Sora and his friends. But while Yoda is known for his impressive fighting skills, Yen Sid mostly just gives advice. He’s a bit of a quirky wizard who constantly reminds Sora that he still has a lot to learn before becoming a true Keyblade Master.

Even though Sora is missing and trapped in a strange place, I’m confident he’ll return in the next game. As a highly skilled Keyblade master, I believe his friends will be the ones to find him.

3. Marluxia / Larxene

Similar to Demyx, Kingdom Hearts 3 brought back Larxene and Marluxia – villains from Chain of Memories – as part of Xehanort’s plan. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t reveal much about their pasts while we’re exploring the Disney worlds, leaving us with no new information about who they were before. However, we do get a clearer sense of their personalities and understand their resentment towards us for defeating them, which is understandable.

It’s surprising that the game doesn’t explain where Larxene and Marluxia came from, or connect them to the ancient Keyblade War. Kingdom Hearts Union X revealed they were originally Keyblade Warriors named Elrena and Lauriam, and were quite important. Since the game includes the Foretellers, it would have been great to see Marluxia and Larxene interact with their old teammates before supposedly turning to darkness.

Though the characters aren’t central to the main story now, their backstories are crucial to the plot of Kingdom Hearts 3. They’re not just disposable soldiers for Xehanort; their histories give them real importance.

2. Xion

Okay, so if you didn’t play 358/2 Days, Xion’s story is seriously confusing. I already knew Namine was basically Kairi’s nobody, so when I found out Xion was like… an incomplete copy of Sora’s memories of Kairi, it felt a little ridiculous, honestly. It’s a Kingdom Hearts game, though – it’s already done some pretty wild things, so at this point, why not just lean into the craziness?

Xion is back as a boss fight, and this time, thankfully, we can save her without causing Roxas more pain. Although she doesn’t drastically change the main story, her return is meaningful and provides a satisfying conclusion to both Roxas and Axel’s journeys.

Seeing her reappear in Kingdom Hearts 3 is a complex moment for both Roxas and Axel. However, some fans have criticized it, as it continues a pattern of the creator, Nomura, bringing characters back from the dead when it might be better to let storylines conclude.

1. Master of Masters

The Master of Masters is a brand new character who was briefly shown in Kingdom Hearts 3 and hinted at in other games, especially Kingdom Hearts Union X, where players controlled one of the very first Keyblade wielders before the first Keyblade War. We find out that the Master of Masters vanished, and only reappears in Kingdom Hearts 3 during a few separate scenes and in a short clip after the credits.

Despite his powerful title, the Master of Masters isn’t scary or intimidating. He actually seems distant and a bit goofy, similar to Demyx, one of the Organization’s most feared members. I’m not suggesting Demyx is the Master of Masters, or even his Nobody, but connecting them would explain why Demyx suddenly disappeared from the story.

Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of Kingdom Hearts, has revealed that the next major story arc will center around a specific character. It’s currently unknown if this character will become the primary villain, similar to Xehanort, or if players will be tasked with finding them. However, Nomura suggests that revisiting scenes from Kingdom Hearts III will offer new insights into their role.
