Ubisoft Starts Internal Investigation. Recent Slip-ups Spark Concerns; There May Be Layoffs at the Very Top

As a longtime Ubisoft fan with countless hours spent exploring the rich worlds they’ve created, the recent turbulence leaves me feeling like I’m navigating through the treacherous waters of Skell Island instead of the smooth sailing of a peaceful lake. The clouds gathering over Ubisoft seem ominous, casting shadows on not just their upcoming releases but also on the future of gaming as we know it.

A cloud of scrutiny is forming above Ubisoft due to the underwhelming sales of Star Wars: Outlaws and the delay in releasing Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. An investigative team will examine the company’s recent decisions.

In a recent announcement, Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, disclosed the initiation of an investigation and also revised the financial goals for the ongoing fiscal year, as stated in his communique.

Given the current hurdles we’re facing, it’s clear that we need to enhance efficiency while maintaining player satisfaction. Consequently, the Executive Committee, under the guidance of the Board of Directors, is initiating a review to optimize our operations, particularly focusing on our player-centric strategy. This move aims to expedite our progress towards an improved strategic model that benefits both our stakeholders and shareholders.

Beyond the formal correspondence, Guillemot additionally penned a message to Ubisoft’s workforce. Insider Gaming, having obtained it directly from the CEO of the French studio, shares this note. The businessman also hinted at taking lessons from this “mistake,” which serves as an encouraging prompt for future endeavors. Alongside the details about the commencement of clarifying processes and updates on a fresh game distribution model, he emphasized learning from the past.

Let us recall that recently Ubisoft investors spoke loudly about the desired changes in the company. Among their demands was, among others, the removal of the aforementioned Yves Guillemot from the position of CEO. We will see if the ongoing audit by the investigative committee will end with the dismissal of the co-founder of one of the giants of the video game industry.
