This weekend, Disney+ has a great selection of movies, including some that you can also see in cinemas. Last week, I highlighted three films available on Disney+: Holes, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. Two of these are part of larger movie series.
I’ve decided to combine the Marvel and Star Wars universes again, two of the most popular movie franchises ever, and pair them with recent releases. This weekend’s Disney+ recommendations aren’t necessarily meant to be watched all at once, but they could work as a three-movie marathon if you’re interested.
I checked out what movies are popular in the U.S., and also looked at new releases that relate to films currently playing in theaters—whether through the storyline, similar ideas, shared universes, actors, or other connections. This makes Disney+ a great option for continuing the movie experience after seeing a film in theaters, or for enjoying movies from the comfort of your home.
Disney+ subscribers had a great selection of new releases to enjoy at home, including a compelling drama featuring a famous cast, a spooky and imaginative horror film, and a thrilling sci-fi adventure starring a well-known actor in a new role. Here are some of the top movies to stream on Disney+ this weekend:
3. Werewolf By Night (2022)
Let’s start with the Marvel Cinematic Universe Special Presentation, Werewolf by Night. It’s a great time to watch this because it ties into three currently popular projects. It’s one of Marvel’s limited Special Presentations, and if you enjoyed the Disney+ hit The Punisher: One Last Kill, this is definitely worth checking out. Like Prime Video’s Spider-Noir, Werewolf by Night is available to watch in both black and white and full color.
With the recent theatrical release of Backrooms and the global success of Obsession, Werewolf by Night offers another thrilling horror choice, conveniently available to stream at home. This Disney+ release centers around Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a man who transforms into a werewolf, and the monster hunters pursuing him. They’re after a powerful artifact, and this story feels different from other Marvel Studios projects.
2. Sentimental Value (2025)
Next up is Sentimental Value, a powerful drama available on Disney+ through Hulu. The film centers around two sisters navigating the unexpected return of their distant father, a successful director. It’s a moving story about grief and family relationships, and it’s surprisingly funny too.
The film Sentimental Value is receiving rave reviews, with a 95% score from critics and a 94% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie features a talented cast including Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning, as well as Renate Reinsve, who also stars in the new horror film Backrooms, released this Friday, May 29th. Seeing Sentimental Value would make a great double feature with Backrooms.
1. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
Currently, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones is the only film from the Disney+ list that’s gaining a lot of attention on the platform. As of today, it’s the 7th most popular movie on Disney+ in the US. Many science fiction fans consider it an important part of the Star Wars saga because it’s where Hayden Christensen first appeared as Anakin Skywalker.
Okay, so seeing The Mandalorian and Grogu in theaters got me thinking about Attack of the Clones. Honestly, it delivers that same kind of simple, enjoyable action and story we saw in the recent Star Wars movie. Hayden Christensen really clicked with both Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan and Natalie Portman as Padmé – their scenes were great. And the movie just looks fantastic. It’s cool because each of these films offers something different, which makes it a nice mix of stuff to watch if you’re subscribed to Disney+.
