Joaquin Phoenix Struggled With Joker 2's Musical Numbers

As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for cinematic excellence and a deep appreciation for performances that push boundaries, I eagerly await the release of Joker: Folie à Deux. The unique collaboration between Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, both gifted artists in their respective fields, promises an unparalleled symbiosis of acting and music.

2006 saw me, Joaquin Phoenix, being nominated for Best Actor, a recognition I received for my portrayal of Johnny Cash in Walk the Line. This role demanded that I sing Cash’s iconic tunes, and while it was an honor, it wasn’t until 2020 when I was awarded Best Actor again, this time for playing Arthur Fleck in Joker. Interestingly, my prior musical background didn’t make the filming of Joker: Folie à Deux any less challenging for me. As Todd Phillips, the director, shared, the pressure of executing the intricate musical sequences left me feeling quite unwell.

In a conversation with EW, Phillips shared that Phoenix found himself unwell daily due to anxiety, as the production demanded him to sing and dance alongside his fresh collaborator, Lady Gaga. Interestingly, Gaga–portraying Harley Quinn in the movie–offered guidance to Phoenix that boosted his acting in those specific scenes. On the flip side, Phoenix offered valuable insights to Gaga that significantly improved her on-screen performance too.

According to Phillips, they exchanged advice – he shared acting insights with her since he’s Joaquin Phoenix and she provided musical guidance as Lady Gaga. In essence, their work together was a harmonious blend of talents, reflecting the spirit of collaboration that great movies embody.

Phillips also elaborated on his reluctance to call Joker: Folie à Deux a musical.

Phillips commented that he received some pushback for stating that the film isn’t strictly a musical, but he didn’t mean this negatively. He adores musicals and the movie does contain music. However, he questioned whether the film evokes the same feelings as traditional musicals. He doesn’t want to mislead anyone into thinking they will be humming the tunes from the movie on their way out of the theater after watching it.

This past week, Lady Gaga disclosed that she’s produced a thematic album titled “Joker: Folie à Deux” to accompany it. The album drops on Friday, September 27, while the movie itself releases a week afterward on Friday, October 4.
