Just jumped into Borderlands 4 with the new 1.7 update, and let me tell you, the Subjugator and Thol the Invincible raid boss are intense! 2K and Gearbox really delivered with this update – definitely a challenge for any Vault Hunter.
On June 25th, Borderlands 4 will receive Update 1.8, which includes the Endgame Raid Takedown and Bounty Pack 3. You can find details on the different game editions for all platforms here, and information about future support plans here. Borderlands 4 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store). I’ve also shared my thoughts on the game’s performance on the Steam Deck and ROG Ally here, and on the PS5 Pro here.
I just checked out the details about the new Raid Boss fight, and 2K and Gearbox Software also dropped a trailer! You can find everything they shared linked below – it looks awesome!
Today, 2K and Gearbox Software launched a new, free raid boss fight – Subjugator and Thol the Invincible – for all Borderlands 4 players as part of Update 1.7. Players who have finished the game’s story can jump right into this difficult new challenge.
These incredibly powerful brothers live on a remote island near the Fadefields, serving the Timekeeper. They’re extremely bored with their unchanging lives and see Vault Hunters as a thrilling challenge. They’re eager to risk everything in a dangerous fight just to feel alive again.
The Encounter
Subjugator and Thol the Invincible are a challenging fight that tests players’ skill and stamina. The battle starts as a tag-team fight, with the two brothers alternating attacks before combining into a powerful duo. If one brother falls, the other transforms into a stronger version and retreats to their special arena. Players will either face the massive Subjugator in “Heaven,” a large, open area requiring aerial movement to dodge attacks, or battle the powerful Thol in “Hell,” a small, lava-filled arena where close-quarters combat is key.
UVHM Timed Runs & Tiered Rewards
Version 1.7 introduces an even harder difficulty – Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode Level 7. You’ll unlock it after finishing the second raid on Level 6. When you start a Level 7 run, a timer appears, challenging you to defeat the Subjugator and Thol as fast as possible to earn rewards from a special loot chest. How quickly you finish determines the quality of your rewards – Silver, Gold, or Platinum – with better loot available at higher tiers. You need at least a Silver ranking to get unique Class Mods from the Subjugator and Thol, and a Platinum ranking guarantees a Legendary item, plus a better chance at finding a rare Pearlescent weapon.
Powerful New Rewards
- One New Pearlescent Weapon: The Jail-Broken Gatling (Ripper SMG) grants a stacking buff with each hit that increases fire rate, damage, and the chance to fire additional projectiles.
- Four New Legendary Items: The Lockjaw (Torgue Assault Rifle), which fires bouncing explosive projectiles; Shammy Kablammy (Tediore Pistol), which douses foes in Moonshine and upon reloading, throws an explosive projectile which burns them; the Flak Cannon (Vladof Heavy Weapon Ordnance), which shreds enemies with a hail of bullets; and the Collector (Order Shield), a high-capacity energy shield with a quick recharge rate offset by a longer recharge delay.
- Five New Class Mods: A unique Class Mod is available for each current Vault Hunter, with a sixth unique Class Mod joining this pool in Q3 2026 when the next Vault Hunter arrives in Story Pack 2.
- New Firmware: The Active Fire firmware rewards precision timing at Tier 3 by dealing bonus damage if you unleash a charge weapon’s full shot the moment it becomes available.

Additional Version 1.7 Features
With corruption growing in Kairos, Update 1.7 makes it easier to find powerful Pearlescent weapons as random rewards from chests, lockers, and other hidden spots. This update also includes a highly requested feature: a toggle to disable shared character progress, letting you start a new character from scratch. The development team is also working on a future update that will let you continue your game on different devices with Cross-Platform Saves.
Endgame Raid Takedown and Bounty Pack 3 Arriving June 25
On June 25th, with the release of Version 1.8, players can look forward to both a free raid called Takedown at the Hadron Abyss and the new paid story DLC, Bounty Pack 3: A Zane to Kill For. If you own the Borderlands 4 Deluxe or Super Deluxe Edition, you’ll automatically get Bounty Pack 3. Otherwise, it will be available for purchase as a separate bundle.
