Disney+ has a lot of fantastic Marvel shows and movies, but one series really shines. Disney+ offers a huge collection of content from popular franchises like Marvel, and they’re always adding more new content.
For the past twenty years, Marvel Studios has primarily concentrated on developing its interconnected movie universe, largely neglecting its television offerings. But recently, they’ve begun to prioritize TV again, investing significant effort in both new shows and bringing back beloved older series.
One standout show is X-Men ’97, a new animated series that continues the story of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series. It’s been a huge success for Marvel, and is showing everyone what Marvel TV shows can achieve.
X-Men ’97 Is Breaking New Ground For Marvel On Disney+
The new trailer for X-Men ’97 season 2 is already a huge hit, racking up millions of views in just one day. While it hasn’t reached the viewership numbers of major Marvel Cinematic Universe releases, fans of this series are incredibly enthusiastic – something we haven’t consistently seen with the broader MCU.
Disney+ has already renewed X-Men ’97 for both season 3 and season 4, even before season 2 has come out! This shows Marvel is really invested in the show and pleased with how well it’s been received, meaning the story will continue for quite a while.
Notably, X-Men ’97 is the first and only show created under Marvel Television’s new collaborative system with Marvel Studios to be renewed for four seasons. In comparison, Daredevil: Born Again, which carries on the spirit of the former Marvel Netflix shows, is currently planned for three seasons, with no word yet on a potential fourth.
Besides Daredevil: Born Again and X-Men ’97, only What If…? and Loki have been renewed for multiple seasons.
X-Men ’97 Deserves More Attention Than It Gets
Despite recent progress, many people still unfairly think of animated shows as being just for kids. While that used to be true, shows like X-Men ’97 are specifically made for adults—particularly those who enjoyed the original X-Men: The Animated Series. This new series proves animation can appeal to a mature audience.
This series boasts fantastic storytelling, with layered characters and genuinely emotional journeys. The plot twists are truly impressive, and the show feels both comforting and modern, like a beloved classic reimagined. Even if you’re unsure, it’s definitely worth watching the first few episodes – you won’t be disappointed.
Marvel Is Starting To Figure Out The TV Space
With the success of X-Men ’97, Marvel appears to be gaining momentum in television. After years of success with movies, and as they wrap up their ambitious but divisive Multiverse Saga, Marvel’s TV shows are becoming increasingly prominent and vital to the overall brand.
Beyond its limited series, Marvel Television is also developing longer-running shows with compelling narratives. The series Wonder Man has been renewed for a second season, following a first season that told a heartfelt and character-focused story about two actors facing challenges.
As a critic, I’ve been watching Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again, and what strikes me is how refreshingly grounded it is. It feels like a classic superhero story, but importantly, it’s carving out its own space within the massive MCU. It’s really focusing on those gritty, street-level heroics we haven’t seen enough of in the blockbuster films. And it’s smart – Marvel’s clearly building things out. Look at what they’re doing with Agatha All Along and VisionQuest; they’re taking the story from WandaVision and cleverly expanding it into a smaller, self-contained franchise within the larger universe. It’s a savvy move.
It’s clear Marvel is still figuring out how to succeed with TV shows, but right now, X-Men ’97 is a standout series – and one of the most surprisingly good shows Disney+ has to offer from the Marvel universe.
