James Gunn Confirms Two Iconic Villains Are Coming To The DCU “In Not Too Long”

The DC Universe is about to get a lot more dangerous.

Someone on Threads asked James Gunn if we might ever see villains like General Zod, Doomsday, Doctor Fate, Black Adam, Ultraman (and his Crime Syndicate), or Darkseid in the DC Universe. Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, gave a mysterious answer, simply stating, “Two of them in not too long…”

As a huge DC fan, I’ve been keeping a close eye on James Gunn’s plans, and looking at the list of characters he’s hinted at, it seems pretty clear Doctor Fate isn’t going to be one of the new faces joining the DCU. Plus, with the first chapter, ‘Gods and Monsters,’ already having a few projects announced, at least one of the characters people are speculating about is already confirmed to be appearing.

DC Studios is developing an animated TV series based on Mister Miracle, featuring the character Scott Free and other important figures from the comic book run by Tom King. Following the announcement that the show will be part of the official DC Universe (DCU) storyline, Tom King revealed that the role of Darkseid has been cast, along with other heroes and villains from his 12-issue comic with Mitch Gerads.

At the end of the Superman movie, it was never clearly shown that Ultraman died. He was pulled into a black hole, leaving his future uncertain. Some fans believe this opens the possibility for him to reappear, possibly as a clone within a storyline involving the Crime Syndicate, if he was transported to their universe.

Considering Black Adam wasn’t a success and marked a low point for the previous DC film universe, a quick return for the character in the new DCU seems unlikely. The same goes for Doomsday, who’s appeared frequently in both movies and TV shows over the past ten years.

Since General Zod appeared in both Man of Steel and The Flash, DC Studios probably won’t be bringing him back anytime soon. That’s why James Gunn’s recent hints likely point to Darkseid or Ultraman as potential villains, though he hasn’t officially confirmed it.

James Gunn’s new DC Universe will begin with many heroes and villains already existing, meaning powerful enemies are likely present from the start. However, we’ll have to wait and see which well-known villains appear in the future DC movies and shows.

This summer, the DC Universe is back with new content! First up is Supergirl on June 26th, then the Lanterns TV series arrives on HBO on August 16th, and finally, Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23rd.
