Disney Is Officially Remaking Avengers: Endgame With The X-Men

Since the huge success of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced challenges in keeping up its previous energy and satisfying fans. Endgame felt like a perfect conclusion to a ten-year story, and the franchise hasn’t quite found its footing since then. However, the period after Endgame hasn’t been without its wins, with shows like Loki and WandaVision, and movies like Shang-Chi and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 all proving to be excellent additions to the MCU.

The highly anticipated second season of X-Men ’97 just revealed its first trailer. Many consider the first season to be the best Marvel project since Endgame, and a standout superhero cartoon in its own right. It successfully brought back the feel of the original X-Men: The Animated Series, combining dramatic personal stories with exciting action. While boasting a grand scope, the show remained focused on the characters and their relationships.

The trailer for X-Men ’97 season 2 suggests the show is going to be even more epic and ambitious than before. While plot details are still limited – the trailer focuses more on creating a mood and teasing exciting moments, like Morph turning into Deadpool – it looks like the series is building towards a large-scale event similar to Endgame for the X-Men.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 Gives Mutants Their Own Avengers: Engame Mission

The trailer for X-Men ’97 season 2 reveals a story similar to Endgame, with heroes scattered across time battling a powerful villain who threatens all of reality. Like the Avengers in Endgame traveling through their timeline to fix a catastrophic event, the X-Men in season 2 are facing Apocalypse across multiple eras—from his beginnings to a bleak future. Crucially, Apocalypse is targeting the X-Men when they were at their weakest: the 1990s.

Apocalypse previously appeared in the film X-Men: Apocalypse, with Oscar Isaac delivering a strong performance. However, the movie itself didn’t quite live up to the character’s potential, lacking strong writing. Given that X-Men ’97 boasts significantly better writing than the later X-Men films from Fox, I’m optimistic it can finally bring a truly impressive version of Apocalypse to the screen, one that does justice to the comic book character.

The new X-Men ’97 series takes place in its own separate timeline, meaning events in the second season won’t impact the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the villain Apocalypse is incredibly powerful – on par with Thanos – and there’s been speculation about who the next major MCU villain could be, with characters like Kang and Doctor Doom being considered.

Who Voices Apocalypse In X-Men ’97?

Apocalypse is a key figure in X-Men history – he’s one of the earliest mutants, incredibly old, and a recurring villain. In the new series, X-Men ’97, Ross Marquand voices him, taking over the role from John Colicos and James Blendick who previously played Apocalypse in the original show. Marquand also voices Professor X and Doctor Doom!

Ross Marquand is famous for his role as Aaron in The Walking Dead, but he’s also incredibly talented at impressions and voice acting. He previously stepped in to voice Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War when Hugo Weaving wasn’t available. With Marquand taking on the main villain, the new season of X-Men ’97 is in excellent hands.
