The game is afoot for the highly anticipated return of Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes origin story.
Following the huge success of season 1 around the world, filming for season 2 of the Prime Video series Young Sherlock has begun. The show, directed and executive produced by Guy Ritchie, stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Sherlock Holmes – a 19-year-old Oxford University student who is years away from becoming the famous detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The new season will see young Sherlock investigating his first cases involving murder and intrigue.
Shortly after the first season of Young Sherlock concluded in March 2026, creator and showrunner Matthew Parkhill announced on Instagram that filming for season 2 has begun. He shared a photo of a film slate detailing production for episode 2 of the new season, along with behind-the-scenes shots of Hero Fiennes Tiffin (as Sherlock Holmes) and Dónal Finn (as James Moriarty) on set.
Season two of Young Sherlock is being filmed in Palermo, Italy, a change from the first season which was largely shot in Spain. However, since the characters in Young Sherlock travel throughout Europe in the first season’s storyline, filming in a new location makes sense for the show’s overall story.
Steve Parkhill has given fans a preview of Young Sherlock season 2, episode 2, and announced a new director: Colm McCarthy. McCarthy has experience with Sherlock Holmes adaptations, having previously directed an episode of BBC’s Sherlock (season 3, episode 2). Mark Patten will also be back as the series’ director of photography, continuing from his work in season 1.
Details about the second season of Young Sherlock are mostly secret, but new photos from the set hint at some surprising developments for Holmes and Moriarty. In particular, Moriarty, played by Finn, is shown disguised as a priest, suggesting a clever new tactic he’ll use in the upcoming mysteries. Meanwhile, Tiffin’s Sherlock is seen in his classic look – tweed jacket, suit, and top hat – as he walks the city streets.
While the rest of the cast for season 2 hasn’t been announced yet, season 1 of Young Sherlock featured Zine Tseng as Princess Shou’an/Xiao Wei, along with Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, Colin Firth, Numar Acar, and Holly Cattle. Director Guy Ritchie, who also served as an executive producer, will return to direct the first episode of the new season.
Although Prime Video hasn’t announced a specific date, a new season of Young Sherlock is likely to premiere in early 2027, as filming is already happening. The show’s return follows the success of its first season, which received positive reviews and attracted 45 million viewers in its first month, making it one of Prime Video’s most popular original series.
