Season 3 will arrive on Apple TV on July 3rd, nearly two years after Season 2 first aired. It’s been a long wait for more of this captivating sci-fi drama, but it promises to be worth it. After such a gap, viewers might need a refresher on important plot points and details.
The show is based on the Wool, Shift, and Dust novels by Graham Yost, and while it largely follows the books’ main plot, it also adds new stories and changes some characters. This makes it tricky even for book readers to keep track of what’s happening and how it differs. With the series ending after season four and season two leaving viewers on a major cliffhanger, season three will be essential for revealing key details and clarifying the overall story.
There Are Parallel Storylines in Silos 17 and 18
The story unfolds through two main threads. Inside the silo, people are starting to rebel and challenge the established authority and what they’ve been told. Simultaneously, Jules (Rebecca Ferguson) ventures outside and discovers another silo—and, surprisingly, many others. This reveals that Silo 18 isn’t the only one, and people aren’t as isolated as they thought.
One of the most interesting characters this season is Solo, played by Steve Zahn. He’s a solitary, almost childlike man living by himself in Silo 17, and initially hesitant to trust anyone, including Jules. However, they eventually connect. Through their travels, Jules discovers that Solo is actually the son of the previous head of IT, who died during a revolt years ago. When the rebellion started, his father hid him in the secure IT vault to protect him, which kept him alive but also left him isolated for decades.
In Silo 18, Jules’s friends are preparing to rebel and seek help from her father, Dr. Pete Nichols (Iain Glen), who believes she’s still alive. Meanwhile, Bernard (Tim Robbins) is employing a strategy of attrition, hoping to force the lower levels to surrender by cutting off their resources. However, those in the lower levels remain determined to destroy the generator if their demands aren’t met.
Bernard suspects Martha Walker is a spy working against him, but he’s unaware that she’s actually the one feeding information to Knox. Knox is fully in the loop, understanding all of Martha’s coded messages. Martha is secretly working against Bernard, and he eventually figures out he’s been tricked.
The actual goal was to destroy the staircase, preventing the Judicial agents from returning upstairs. They managed to do so, but Dr. Nichols tragically died in the process. He sacrificed himself to save others and earn his daughter’s admiration, even if it meant doing so in death.
Jules Finally Makes Her Way Back to Silo 18, But the Return Is Explosive
Jules, after talking with Solo/Jimmy and getting help from others, gets a suit that allows her to return to the outside world and specifically to Silo 18. But she’s now racing against time, because Solo’s hidden memories have revealed some very unsettling truths.
The silo has a safety system – a pipe that can release poisonous gas if necessary. Knowing a rebellion is happening and fearing those in control might use this system, Jules understands the urgency of returning and warning everyone before it’s activated.
While all this unfolds, Bernard faces a challenge from Lukas, who discovers something disturbing during his travels. This revelation is so significant that he immediately resigns, likely related to the attempts to rewrite the past and the security measures in place. It’s possible Lukas has uncovered information that hasn’t been revealed to the audience yet.
Completely stunned by what Lukas revealed, Bernard gives the keys to Robert Sims, and Sims eagerly steps up to take control. However, the AI running things has other plans – it wants Sims’ wife, Camille, to lead instead. This is a major setback for Sims, and he’s not likely to accept it without a fight.
Once Jules reaches Silo 18, she appears on camera to prove she’s still alive. She also displays a message cautioning others about the dangers outside, and this convinces the people inside to stay safe indoors.
As soon as Jules enters the airlock, she finds Bernard preparing to depart in his own spacesuit. He seems broken, possibly because of what Lukas told him. Jules pleads with him to help her stop the operation, but he’s unresponsive and lost in his own world. The moment Jules steps into the chamber, it ignites, trapping both of them in flames.
The Backstory Tease Will Be Important in Silo Season 3
The story will delve into the origins of the silos and how they were built. A brief scene at the end hints at this, showing a Georgia congressman speaking with a reporter. They talk about a dirty bomb explosion, and the reporter presses him about potential retaliation and whether a radiological attack might have already occurred.
He’s upset she’s questioning him, especially because he believed their meeting was a date. However, he gives her a duck-shaped PEZ dispenser – a seemingly insignificant item that fans will recognize as the same “relic” that started everything in Season 1. As viewers know, items from the old world are banned inside the silo. This appears to be the very same PEZ dispenser that Jules’ partner, George, found while investigating the truth, suggesting a significant connection to past events.
As a big fan of the source material, I was really intrigued by that PEZ dispenser moment – it hints at a really important piece of backstory, revealing who’s involved and their connections. And it’s exciting to know that both Ashley Zukerman, playing Congressman Daniel, and Jessica Henwick as the journalist Helen, will be major players when Season 3 finally arrives!
We don’t know what happened to Bernard inside the silo, but since Jules is the main character, she likely survived. When Jules gets back, she’ll have a lot to share about what she experienced. The biggest mysteries now are what Jules will do with the information about how the silo is protected, how Lukas will react to what he’s discovered, and how Camille will use her likely new authority.
Following the intense events of Season 2, Season 3 of Silo promises a more peaceful setup – but it’s likely just the eye of the storm. We might see Jules return, the silo undergo changes after the rebellion, and finally learn the origins of this world – who created it and for what reason. While Season 3 will likely provide answers to many questions, it’s Season 4 that will truly reveal the complete story.
