James Cameron’s Avatar films have dramatically changed how movies are made. Starting with the original in 2009 and continuing with last year’s Fire and Ash, the series has captivated audiences with the vibrant, otherworldly beauty of Pandora, telling the story of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family. The next film, Avatar 4, will shift the focus to Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), Jake and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldaña) adopted daughter, a change that has been planned for a long time.

After twelve years of planning, the next Avatar movie will break with tradition by telling the story from a perspective outside of the Sully family. This suggests director James Cameron doesn’t see Avatar as a simple three-movie series, but rather an ongoing saga with multiple main characters. This change will allow the story to grow and evolve across generations, establishing Avatar as a long-lasting, multi-faceted narrative.

Kiri’s Narration in Avatar 4 Will Be a First for the Franchise

The first two Avatar films were narrated by Jake Sully. However, the upcoming film, Fire and Ash, will be narrated by his son, Lo’ak (Britain Dalton). This makes Fire and Ash unique as it will be the first film to focus on a character outside of the immediate Sully family and the first to be narrated by a woman.

James Cameron recently explained to Rotten Tomatoes why he decided to tell part of the story from a different character’s perspective. While Jake Sully’s point of view was effective, Cameron wanted to explore the relationships between characters from new angles. This began with Fire and Ash, which was the first time the story wasn’t narrated by Jake.

Cameron pointed out that Lo’ak’s point of view adds a new emotional layer to the story. Seeing Jake through Lo’ak’s eyes helps us understand Jake in different ways. This also allows the audience to better understand both characters, as Lo’ak’s perspective highlights the connections and conflicts between father and son.

Although we don’t yet know exactly where the new movie is headed, focusing on Kiri’s perspective makes sense, considering how important she is to the overall story. Because she’s deeply connected to Pandora and Eywa, her viewpoint promises to offer a fresh perspective.

This Kiri Change Will Be a Major Shift for the Avatar Franchise

Although it might not seem significant, having Kiri narrate the new film represents a major shift for the series. Previously, the story was told through the eyes of Jake and Lo’ak, both of whom were outsiders – Jake as a human adapting to life on Pandora, and Lo’ak as someone struggling to find his place. Kiri’s narration is unique because it will be the first time we hear the story from someone fully connected to Pandora, both spiritually and biologically.

All Na’vi are naturally connected to Pandora through their neural connections, but Neytiri possesses an especially strong bond. She can sense Eywa – the guiding force of Pandora – almost as if it were her own thoughts and feelings, and quickly adjust to any environment, even breathing underwater with the ocean-dwelling clans. Her perspective as narrator will offer a fresh look at Pandora, particularly focusing on how the ongoing war impacts its delicate ecosystem and all living things.

As a movie fan, I’m really excited about where Kiri’s story could go. Jake and Lo’ak mostly recap things we’ve already seen with them, but Kiri’s narration feels like it’ll take us on a whole new journey – a real dive into who she is and where she comes from. The previous films hinted at her backstory, but honestly, there’s still so much we don’t know, and I’m hoping this will finally fill in those gaps.

Many viewers are aware that Neytiri’s biological mother is Dr. Grace Augustine, and that, after Dr. Augustine’s death, Neytiri’s Na’vi avatar unexpectedly became pregnant. Beyond that, her story remains largely a mystery. So far, the plot has focused on unraveling the circumstances of her birth and the extraordinary abilities she possesses. Through her perspective, audiences will likely witness her uncovering the truth, as many fans have already speculated.

As a big movie fan, I’m really excited about the shift in narration. It feels like we could get to see things from so many different characters’ points of view, which would be amazing! And even though we don’t know how many more Avatar films are coming, with two already in the works, it doesn’t seem like James Cameron is stopping anytime soon. Especially with Kiri’s story, I think we’re opening up a whole new path for the series, letting them build out the world even more and really move things forward.

The story could broaden its scope by moving beyond the Sully family, even with a character as central as Kiri. This would allow it to explore Pandora through the eyes of various Na’vi people, enriching the world and suggesting a much larger, more expansive story than initially planned.

The Avatar franchise could become richer and more expansive by moving beyond just telling stories through the Sully family.
