As a long-time fan with a heart full of samurai spirit, I must say that the announcement of Ghost of Yōtei by Sucker Punch Productions has me thrilled beyond words! After immersing myself in the breathtaking world of Ghost of Tsushima, the thought of venturing into new, unexplored territories of feudal Japan is a dream come true.
Today, Sucker Punch Productions unveiled Ghost of Yōtei, their next project following the highly praised Ghost of Tsushima. However, it seems that this isn’t a traditional sequel.
As per a blog post by Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb on PlayStation, the creative team at Sucker Punch aimed to explore aspects beyond Jin Sakai’s tale and the island of Tsushima. Their focus, therefore, was primarily centered around the concept of the Ghost character.
At Sucker Punch, we’re fascinated by the beginnings of characters, so we decided to delve into the concept of a fresh hero donning a Ghost mask, and in doing so, discover a novel legend. This journey took us to the creation of Yōtei’s Ghost: a new main character, a tale yet untold, and an unexplored corner of Japan waiting to be discovered.
The developers have opted to keep many details under wraps regarding their upcoming game, but they’ve hinted that this fresh title will be set in the year 1603, a significant time leap of more than 300 years following the storyline of Ghost of Tsushima.
This game narrates the tale of our protagonist, Atsu, as she navigates through the territories near Mount Yotei – a massive mountain situated at the core of Ezo, which is now recognized as Hokkaido in modern times.
1603 saw this region lying beyond Japan’s jurisdiction, teeming with vast plains of wild grass, snow-capped tundras, and hidden perils as Goldfarb described. This landscape is a stark contrast to the disciplined samurai communities of Tsushima. It serves as the backdrop for an exciting original tale that we’re eager to share with you.
The game being developed is Sucker Punch’s inaugural creation exclusively designed for PlayStation 5, with an anticipated release date somewhere in 2025.
