WGA West Ratifies Ellen Stutzman’s Contract on 97% Vote, Elects Three New Board Members

As a seasoned movie lover with decades of immersion in the silver screen world, I must say that the recent developments within the Writers Guild of America West have piqued my interest. The election and ratification of Ellen Stutzman as executive director, following her successful leadership during the historic strike, is indeed a momentous occasion. Her impressive track record and the overwhelming support she received from the members are truly commendable.

The members of the Western branch of the Writers Guild of America have strongly endorsed the appointment of Ellen Stutzman as their union’s executive director. This decision comes one year after her notable leadership during a significant strike action.

Stutzman’s contract was ratified with 97% of the vote, with 2,279 in favor and 72 opposed.

In November, Stutzman assumed the role of executive director, as the union declared that David Young, their long-standing leader, was retiring. Prior to his retirement, Young had taken a medical leave, which left Stutzman acting as the chief negotiator during negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers earlier in the year.

In the previous fiscal year, Stutzman received a payment amounting to approximately twice as much as her salary when she served as an assistant executive director.

On Tuesdays announcement, it was shared that three fresh faces have been chosen for the Board of Directors as part of their election process.

I’m thrilled to share that I, Melinda Hsu, was the leading contender in the recent election, receiving a remarkable 1,491 votes. Additionally, Chris Hazzard and Danny Tolli also secured their spots on the board, finishing fifth and seventh respectively. It’s an honor to announce that we will be joining five incumbents who were successfully re-elected: Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Deric A. Hughes, Justin Halpern, Travis Donnelly, and John Rogers. We look forward to contributing our skills and ideas to the board in the coming term.

Hsu oversees a podcast titled “Lead With Kindness,” which strives to reshape the ethos of Hollywood by promoting kindness and inclusivity. Additionally, she campaigned for a seat on the board based on her commitment to kindness.

What motivated me to run was my desire to demonstrate kindness in practice. If chosen, I aim to initiate a program led by the Guild for training, which I believe will bring about lasting improvement in writers’ rooms and other areas where the Guild has influence.

Hsu was a writer on “Lost,” and currently has an overall deal at ABC Signature.

During the strike, Hazard, a skilled feature writer, took part in the swift action team. This group organized protests and halted filming at various locations during the wee hours of the morning. On the other hand, Tolli held positions as both a strike leader and location supervisor for Netflix.
