Jeff Zucker-Led RedBird IMI Acquires TV Production Company Efran Films Canada, Which Is Rebranding as Bright North Studios

As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s witnessed the rise and fall of numerous production houses, I must say that Jeff Zucker’s latest acquisition of Bright North Studios (formerly Efran Films Canada) seems to be a strategic move that could shake up the industry. With his extensive background in news media, particularly at CNN, and his knack for identifying promising ventures, as seen with Media Res, EverWonder Studios, and others, Zucker’s RedBird IMI is shaping up to be a formidable force in the realm of narrative nonfiction TV.

Under the guidance of its CEO, Jeff Zucker, RedBird IMI, a media investment company, has purchased Bright North Studios, a television production company formerly known as Efran Films Canada.

Efran Films Canada, based in Toronto, is undergoing a change and will now be known as Bright North Studios. This company, renowned for its work in narrative nonfiction television, has created shows such as “FBI True” on CBS, “Never Seen Again” and “PD True” on Paramount+, “100 Days to Indy” on the CW, “While the Rest of Us Die” on Vice TV, and “Who the (Bleep) Did I Marry?” on Investigation Discovery.

The specific financial details of RedBird IMI’s purchase of Efran Films have not been revealed. In this transaction, Shawn Efran remains as CEO of Bright North Studios, while Morgan Hertzan takes over as CEO of Bright North Studios USA. Previously, both Hertzan and Efran collaborated at “60 Minutes” and jointly sold LX.TV to Zucker. Hertzan’s recent position was president of global TV at Vice Media Group, where he managed all television activities. Zucker, who previously served as CEO of CNN, will secure a place on the board of Bright North Studios.

2022 marked the inception of my venture, RedBird IMI, a partnership between RedBird Capital Partners and International Media Investments based in Abu Dhabi. With a vision to expand within news, entertainment, and sports sectors by acquiring media properties, our journey began. Recently, we’ve added Efran Films to our family of companies, making it our sixth acquisition since the start. This follows previous deals for scripted production company Media Res, unscripted production company EverWonder Studios, children’s entertainment firm Hidden Pigeon Co., digital outlet Front Office Sports, and U.K.-based All3Media Group, valued at a staggering $1.45 billion. As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to be part of this dynamic expansion!

Zucker stated, ‘Bright North Studios stands out as a pioneer in creating high-caliber content based on real-life tales, making it a valuable asset to our growing collection.’ With an overwhelming interest from TV networks and streaming services for content that provides exclusive access to notable personalities and delves into significant events, Bright North Studios has demonstrated exceptional skill in narrating genuine stories with unsurpassed excellence. We’re thrilled about the prospect of collaborating with Bright North to expand their studio and distribution network.’

Efran stated, “RedBird IMI and Jeff have swiftly compiled an outstanding collection of innovative creative firms – the cream of the crop in our line of work. We’re proud and excited to be a part of RedBird IMI and can’t wait to share even more compelling, high-quality stories with this latest investment.” Hertzan also commented, “Bright North creates captivating true stories that are currently highly sought after in our industry. I am ecstatic about joining RedBird IMI as we embark on the best days of our journey ahead.

The acquisition of Bright North Studios by RedBird IMI was finalized on September 19th, and it received approval from the Minister of Canadian Heritage, according to the company’s announcement.
