Adam McKay Joins Amazon Workers-Rights Documentary ‘Union’ as Executive Producer (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for films that tackle real-life issues with a dose of satire and wit, I must say “Union” has piqued my interest. With Adam McKay, a mastermind behind some of the most thought-provoking comedies and serious dramas of our time, joining as an executive producer, this documentary promises to be nothing short of exhilarating.

Renowned filmmaker Adam McKay, who has won Academy Awards for his screenwriting, producing, and directing work, will take on the role of executive producer for the documentary “Union”. This highly-acclaimed film had its premiere at Sundance and was awarded the special jury prize in the U.S. competition category at the festival. The movie garnered exceptional praise for its portrayal of a group of warehouse workers as they initiated a grassroots union campaign at an Amazon fulfillment center in Staten Island, revealing their struggle in captivating reviews.

Todd Schulman, from McKay’s HyperObject Industries, has additionally joined the production team in a role as executive producer for the politically charged movie. This film is directed by Brett Story, who has previously worked on “The Hottest August”, and Stephen Maing, known for “Crime + Punishment”. The producers, Brett Story, Stephen Maing, Samantha Curley, Mars Verrone, and Martin DiCicco have collaborated with distribution expert Michael Tuckman and the Impact Producers Red Owl to distribute the film independently in cinemas. The release begins on October 18th.

McKay stated that ‘Union’ is not just a film depicting the pivotal struggle of our times – the revival of labor unions in the face of vast income disparity, but it’s also a thrilling, can’t-look-away movie.

Initially recognized for his work as a chief scriptwriter on “Saturday Night Live,” McKay later gained fame by directing popular comedies such as “Step Brothers” and “Anchorman.” He then shifted his satirical perspective to tackle more weighty topics, including climate change in “Don’t Look Up,” the 2007 housing market crisis in “The Big Short,” and the career of Dick Cheney in “Veep.” McKay earned an Academy Award for the screenplay of “The Big Short.

As a film enthusiast, I’m overjoyed to announce that Adam McKay has joined our ‘Union’ team as an executive producer. Known for his brilliant, witty, and hard-hitting films that dissect corporate culture and unchecked capitalism, Adam brings a unique perspective to our project. His insightful take on socio-economic issues and his passion for fighting systemic injustice make him the ideal collaborator for our film about ordinary individuals standing up against one of the world’s most influential corporations.

The documentary titled “EbMaster” focuses on an assorted group of employees who establish the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), aiming to better their working conditions within the tech and retail giant. They’re up against significant challenges, as Amazon boasts vast resources, and they don’t have substantial backing from prominent unions or political figures. Meanwhile, they navigate internal disagreements and strife. Critic Guy Lodge of EbMaster, in a favorable review, described the film as “thoughtfully detailed” and “inspiring.

After its debut at Sundance, the film “Union” has been showcased at various other prestigious film festivals such as CPH DOX, Visions du Reel, Hot Docs, True/False, Chicago Doc 10, DC/DOX, Full Frame, Sheffield Film Festival, Camden, and a special screening hosted by Michael Moore at the Michigan Theater.
