Jujutsu Kaisen’s most hated villain was even more important than you realized

As a long-time follower of manga and anime, I have to admit that Mahito, the villain from Jujutsu Kaisen, has been quite the enigma for many of us fans. But after delving deeper into his character, I find myself utterly captivated by the profound symbolism hidden behind this seemingly evil figure.

It’s possible that Mahito, the villain from Jujutsu Kaisen, is disliked by many, yet his character hides a more profound meaning that not everyone fully appreciates.

Prior to the Shibuya Incident, the Disaster Curses served as primary antagonists in Jujutsu Kaisen. These curses include Jogo, Hanami, Dagon, and Mahito. They belong to a special class known as Special Grade, and were birthed from human fear of natural disasters at their core.

Contrary to his fellow members, Mahito stands apart because instead of being spawned by a natural catastrophe, he originates from humanity’s fundamental fear of one another. As a result, he possesses the most human-like features among the group and an equally terrifying skillset.

Beyond his origin, Mahito stands out as the youngest member in the group, and it’s widely believed he holds the most promise. Interestingly, this aspect about him was overlooked until recently due to a Reddit post questioning why Mahito is the youngest given that human fear has been around as long as any other fear.

The answer behind this is quite simple, but still profound. As some users point out in the comment section, this is a clever social commentary from creator Gege Akutami.

The growing apprehension towards humanity stems from the state of society, and over time, people have become increasingly conscious of the horrific acts their peers can commit. This heightened awareness has, in turn, given rise to this fear, culminating in the emergence of Mahito.

The fear of others in a society is influenced by the state of that society. In ancient times, there were certainly conflicts between tribes, but typically, people desired peace over war. Even when encountering members of rival tribes, it was often more desirable for both parties to return home instead of escalating into a long-standing feud.

Gege appears to be exploring the concept that throughout history, but particularly in recent times, our relationships have shifted from primarily safeguarding one another to increasingly posing threats to each other. Nowadays, we harbor fears towards each other that were previously unheard of, and these apprehensions have accumulated into a new type of catastrophe – human beings themselves.

With our ability to inflict widespread devastation growing, the malevolent specter embodying our mutual fears took on a form more fittingly symbolizing the capacity for total annihilation.

It’s a very interesting take on a character as hated as Mahito. But it also shows how Akutami has cleverly incorporated such subtle and profound details in creating his characters. It’ll surely encourage us to look deeper into Jujutsu Kaisen’s other offerings.
