Disney+’s Smash Hit Sci-Fi Movie Is Great, But Its 2-Part Prequel Is Even Better

I’ve been so impressed with the Star Wars content on Disney+! While the movies are fantastic – and one in particular is a real standout – I honestly think the prequel series based on it is even better. Since Disney took over Lucasfilm, we’ve gotten so much great Star Wars content, both the classic films and some amazing original shows. Disney+ has become a go-to for sci-fi fans, but for me, that movie and its prequel series are truly special – they just hit different!

As a huge Star Wars fan, I always put Rogue One: A Star Wars Story near the top of my list – it’s definitely one of the most popular films Disney has made in the franchise. The story centers around Jyn Erso and her journey to join the Rebel Alliance. Essentially, it shows how the rebels got the plans for the Death Star – plans that included a crucial weakness built in by Jyn’s own father – and how they managed to deliver them just in time for Luke to blow the whole thing up in A New Hope. It really fills in a vital piece of the original story!

When Rogue One came out, it was an immediate success, earning over $1 billion and receiving very positive reviews – consistently in the 80s on Rotten Tomatoes. It remains Disney’s most popular Star Wars film. However, the follow-up series, Andor, has surpassed it for many fans and is now considered the best Star Wars television show ever created.

Andor Is A Rare Prequel That’s Far Superior To The Original, Rogue One

Prequel series rarely outshine the originals, but Andor impressively surpasses Rogue One. It takes everything that made Rogue One great—like focusing on the everyday people within the Rebel Alliance, complex political maneuvering, and secret missions—and elevates it to a new level. In short, Andor achieves everything Rogue One did for Star Wars, and it does so even more effectively.

Even before it came out, Rogue One was a fantastic, self-contained Star Wars story – focused, well-paced, and fitting perfectly into the existing universe. But after watching season 2 of Andor, which showed Cassian’s journey leading up to the events of Rogue One, the movie became even more powerful. Andor gave so much background and detail to the struggle to uncover the Death Star plans that Rogue One now feels like the incredible, heartbreaking finale to an epic science fiction saga.

While Andor successfully built upon the foundation laid by Rogue One, it truly excels with its own unique characters and storylines. The new characters – including Luthen, Kleya, Syril, Dedra, Bix, and Brasso – are all incredibly well-developed, complex, and brought to life by fantastic performances. In fact, many viewers find them even more compelling than the already impressive characters in Rogue One.

Compared to Rogue One, Andor is a much more compelling story. It’s crafted to be consistently gripping, with a complex plot, strong political themes, and a realistic portrayal of the Empire as a frighteningly believable fascist regime. Andor often achieves more impact through a single, tense conversation than Rogue One did with entire action sequences.

Simply put, Andor is a modern masterpiece. It’s a deeply moving, suspenseful, and shockingly relevant show – arguably the best science fiction has to offer, and definitely the best Star Wars series. Some even believe it’s the greatest Star Wars story ever created. It’s a truly impactful show that deserves all the praise it receives, and it far surpasses Rogue One in scope and quality.

Rogue One Is Still A Great Star Wars Movie, But Andor Is Legendary

What’s truly remarkable about Andor being superior to Rogue One is that Rogue One is already considered one of the best Star Wars films of the past few years. It would be noteworthy if Andor simply outshone a weaker film like The Rise of Skywalker, but Rogue One is a genuinely excellent movie. It was a critical and commercial success, earning over a billion dollars and representing a peak for Disney’s Star Wars films.

When it was released, Rogue One raised the bar for Star Wars films, delivering a story that was notably realistic, tense, thrilling, and mature. It truly felt like a classic war movie, with compelling characters, high emotional impact, and spectacular action – a film that excelled in every way.

Look, I absolutely loved Rogue One – it felt perfect, nailing everything from the huge battles to the quiet character scenes. But honestly? Andor is just on another level. It’s wild to say, considering how much I enjoyed Rogue One, but Andor really surpasses it in almost every way. It just proves how incredible Andor is as a show – it’s better than one of the best Star Wars films we’ve ever gotten.
