A frequent observation from wrestlers of the Attitude Era about today’s performers is that they use their downtime differently. Rather than relaxing with video games or launching fitness channels on YouTube, The Godfather explained that many wrestlers back then would often go to strip clubs after shows.
In a conversation with esportsbets.com, The Godfather shared details about he and his former coworkers visiting strip clubs after finishing performances at house shows, Monday Night Raw, or SmackDown. Most wrestling fans probably wouldn’t be shocked to hear that, considering the character he developed after his time as Papa Shango, but they might be surprised to learn which WWE legend frequently joined him:
Most of the time, around 80%, Taker and I were likely at a strip club. We’d usually have a private area reserved for us. We enjoyed ourselves and weren’t afraid to spend money. When the club closed and everyone else left, the staff would often let us stay a bit longer for some privacy.
As a long-time wrestling fan, I don’t really remember hearing much about The Undertaker hitting up strip clubs when people talked about his amazing career in WWE. But now that he’s stepped away from the Undertaker character and is being more open, a lot of details about his life outside the ring are coming to light. I wonder how ‘The Deadman’ feels about this stuff being discussed so openly, but honestly, it’s pretty new for fans to hear about what he did in his personal time.
Although strip clubs wouldn’t be featured in an episode of WWE: Unreal today, they were reportedly a common part of the WWE experience for wrestlers in the past. According to Godfather, this was simply a reflection of the culture at the time:
We frequented strip clubs quite a bit. It was a very different era. There wasn’t any social media, laptops, or cell phones – they were just starting to introduce pagers, also known as beepers.
Today, it’s incredibly simple to record a WWE performer at a strip club and share it widely, and that would likely cause a big issue given the current climate. It probably wasn’t as much of a concern during the time of The Godfather’s era, when the company often faced criticism for how it portrayed its female wrestlers.
It’s hard to picture today’s top wrestlers visiting, but this spot used to be a relaxing escape for The Godfather and other wrestlers who preferred privacy. It wasn’t about the location itself, but rather a place where they could go to avoid attention from fans, according to the story.
The entire team frequently visited strip clubs, and going there offered a strange sense of safety. It wasn’t just about the dancers; most of the guys were focused on *them*, not on you, so it was a place where you could relax and be yourself without being bothered. It was a good spot to just hang out and avoid unwanted attention.
It’s a bit melancholy to realize someone might only feel truly themselves when they’re alone, like in an empty strip club late at night. However, this could explain why today’s biggest celebrities are so open about admitting they’re performing a role, and simply trying to be regular people when they’re off-duty from things like the WWE.

In a recent conversation, WWE’s Chelsea Green shared how often she sees her husband, Matt Cardona, and expressed a strong desire for him to join the company. She believes he’s a valuable asset and would be a great addition to the WWE roster. It’s clear she’s a big supporter of his career and wants to see him succeed within the same organization as her.
I really enjoy hearing unusual stories like this, and honestly, it’s one of the more subdued ones I’ve come across from a wrestler’s past. Thankfully, there were no stories about wild partying, a physical altercation, or a wrestler having an embarrassing incident on a flight.
As for what The Godfather is up to these days, he’s still making appearances at WWE events and is thankful for his health, months removed from a serious car accident. He had been traveling with another person in a truck when it began to hydroplane, eventually rolling over three times before coming to a stop. It’s a pretty scary incident, but apparently, he’s no worse for wear and back to giving interviews about his past in the WWE.
SmackDown broadcasts on the WWE Network on USA every Friday at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Don’t miss it as WWE builds towards John Cena’s last match in December and prepares for all the excitement of WrestleMania season.
