Hideo Kojima has given The Mandalorian and Grogu a rave review.
A video game designer and writer has called the new Star Wars movie an “entertaining spectacle,” and has shared what he enjoyed about it. Reviews for The Mandalorian and Grogu have been mixed since its release in theaters on May 22, 2026. Some critics thought it was a fun addition to the Star Wars universe, while others felt it was better suited for streaming on Disney+ than for a cinematic experience. Currently, the movie has a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 247 reviews.
Hideo Kojima recently shared his thoughts on The Mandalorian & Grogu, calling the new Star Wars film a thrilling and exciting adventure. Even though he hadn’t watched much of The Mandalorian series, he enjoyed the movie, especially seeing it in IMAX. Kojima described it as an “all-out spectacle,” praising director Jon Favreau for successfully combining so many different parts of the Star Wars universe into a single movie experience.
Check out what Kojima had to say below:
I recently saw “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” on IMAX, and it was fantastic. I’d only caught a glimpse of the first episode back in 2019 when I was looking at the technology used to film it, but this time I was completely hooked. The show has it all: exciting action sequences, including chases, fights with swords and guns, and even battles with huge monsters and robots. It’s a total action-packed experience! The filmmakers used every trick in the book – CGI, puppets, makeup, animatronics, and stop motion – and the attention to detail is incredible. You’ll see familiar elements from throughout the entire Star Wars story, like X-Wings, AT-ATs, and stormtroopers. It’s a truly spectacular and skillfully made show created by Jon Favreau.
Hideo Kojima isn’t the only one who enjoyed The Mandalorian and Grogu. While the film received a somewhat mixed response overall, many viewers praised its exciting action sequences and the creative blend of CGI and practical effects. A key highlight for many was the focus on Din Djarin and Grogu’s relationship, and their central role in a story about battling the last of the Empire.
Some viewers have felt the movie resembled a collection of episodes that could have fit into a fourth season of The Mandalorian, but Hideo Kojima highlights the film’s strengths and successes. It marked an exciting return for Star Wars to cinemas, being the first theatrical release since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Despite its connection to a TV series, the movie still works well as a standalone addition to the Star Wars saga.
This film could signal a return to regular theatrical releases for the franchise, with many more movies already in the works. One of those is Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, planned for May 28, 2027. With a focus on a more lighthearted Star Wars story featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu, it appears the franchise is eager to expand the Star Wars universe with a lot of new and exciting stories.
Hideo Kojima felt The Mandalorian and Grogu captured the magic of Star Wars films in a way he hasn’t seen in years. Despite mixed reviews, the movie has clearly resonated with him. It remains to be seen how well it will continue to perform with audiences and what its ultimate box office success will be.
