Pink Parrot Media Scoops Animated Climate Change Doc ‘Black Butterflies’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has witnessed the ebb and flow of the cinematic landscape over the past few decades, I am genuinely thrilled by the news of Pink Parrot Media acquiring global rights to the 2D-animated climate change documentary, “Black Butterflies.” My life experience, which includes countless hours spent in darkened theaters, has taught me that a film’s success is not solely dependent on its visual splendor, but also on the powerful narratives it conveys.

International distribution firm Pink Parrot Media has secured worldwide distribution rights for the animated feature “Black Butterflies,” created by David Baute. This move comes after a highly successful summer film festival tour, culminating in the world premiere at the Annecy Contrechamp competition.

Pink Parrot is currently holding meetings with distributors globally, and they’ve sealed a partnership with Sideral Cinema in Spain, the distributor for this year’s Spanish Oscar entry, “Saturn Returns.

The film “Black Butterflies” is set to hit Spanish cinemas on December 5, following its domestic debut at the Sitges festival on October 4 as an official selection. The team behind the movie, including screenwriter Yaiza Berrocal, composer Diego Navarro, production designer and animation director Pepe Sánchez, director of photography and art María Pulido, and director Baute, will be present for the Catalan screening.

Coming festivals where we’ll be present are Animasyros, DocsMx, and the Manchester Animation Festival.

A 2D-animated climate change documentary titled “Black Butterflies” draws inspiration from Baute’s live-action 2020 film “Climate Exodus.” The fresh production blends heartfelt and personal stories of women displaced by climate change from Kenya, India, and the Caribbean. Collaboratively, Baute, screenwriter Yaiza Berrocal, art director María Pulido (“Ámome”), production designer, and animation director José Sanchez Alonso (“Run Ozzy Run”) worked on weaving these narratives into a single, impactful film. Additionally, Ruben Blades, a Grammy-winning Panamanian artist, contributes an original song to the movie, enhancing its marketability and popularity.

The film titled ‘Black Butterflies’ is produced by Ikiru Films from Spain (known for ‘Tad, The Lost Explorer’), along with Tinglado Film (‘Ona’) and Catalan companies Anangu Group (‘Mummies’) and CCMA. Additionally, Panama’s Tunche Films (‘Ainbo: Spirit Of The Amazon’) are involved as well. This production has been financially backed by RTVE (Spanish pubcaster), 3Cat in Catalonia, Public Television of the Canary Islands, Mogambo, and received funding from Spain’s Ministry of Culture-ICAA. It also received support from ICEC-Department of Culture-Generalitat de Catalunya, the government of the Canary Islands, and the Island Council of Tenerife.

Edmon Roch, producer for the movie ‘Ikiru’, expressed his delight about today’s news: “It’s a privilege to embark on this adventure with Pink Parrot Media, a sales agent boasting expertise, diligence, and enthusiasm. They decided to back our film following our pitch at Annecy. We’re equally thrilled to collaborate with Sideral Cinema, a company known for its meticulous care of each release, as our distributor in Spain.

Tania Pinto Da Cunha, VP and partner at Pink Parrot Media, commented, “The story ‘Black Butterflies’ is both striking and emotional, raising awareness about climate change. What drew us to this tale is its powerful reminder of the human toll of global warming and the necessity of unity in a world that’s constantly evolving. At PPM, we are always on the hunt for stories with meaning, and this film offers far more than just that. The visuals are breathtaking, it carries a compelling message, and its animation style is exceptionally captivating.

Roberto Butragueño, CEO of Sideral Cinema, a Spanish distributor, concluded: ‘We are honored to present to the Spanish audience this exceptional film dealing with crucial and contemporary topics. Furthermore, we’re thrilled to keep working with Ikiru following our delightful partnership on ‘Saturn Returns.’
