As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for underdog stories and a deep appreciation for the journey of those who defy the odds to reach their dreams, I am genuinely thrilled about the upcoming project “Backline.” Having grown up watching athletes from all corners of the globe rise to fame in American sports, I can’t help but be moved by the tale of two Nigerian friends chasing their own American dream.
Joel Embiid’s mini-series production, Miniature Géant, together with LeBron James’ sports empowerment company, Uninterrupted, have revealed their upcoming project titled “Backline”. This project is a compelling narrative film that focuses on the journey of African athletes as they strive to make it in the world of professional American football.
Based on real-life experiences of NFL athletes today, “Backline” tells the story of two Nigerian friends chasing their dream of playing professional football in America. Created and directed by Editi Effiong (“The Black Book”), filming is scheduled to start in 2025. The production will be filmed in both Nigeria and the United States.
Effiong described ‘Backline’ as a tale that showcases the indomitable power of human resilience, hope, camaraderie, and determination to surmount adversity. Since conversing with the actual football players who ventured to play in the U.S., this story has become a captivating preoccupation for me,” said Effiong. “We are thrilled to have Joel Embiid, Miniature Géant, and Uninterrupted join us in this compelling project, which aims to inspire people globally.
2023 saw Joel Embiid establish Miniature Titan in collaboration with The SpringHill Company, a creative and production entity spearheaded by James and Maverick Carter. This venture seeks to spotlight individuals who have charted unique paths to triumph, using documentaries, scripted series, podcasts, and branded material. Embiid’s transformation from Yaounde, Cameroon to the NBA serves as a blueprint for the narratives Miniature Titan chooses to tell.
The executive producers of “Backline” are football legend Osi Umenyiora, along with Effiong and Anakle Films.
