‘Modern Family’ Star Eric Stonestreet Says ABC Rejecting Mitch-Cameron Spinoff ‘Felt a Little Hurtful’: ‘It Would Have Been a Slam Dunk’

As a long-time fan and admirer of Eric Stonestreet‘s exceptional acting skills, particularly his portrayal of Cameron Tucker in “Modern Family,” I find it hard not to empathize with his disappointment over the scrapped spinoff series. The bond between Cameron, Mitchell, and Lily was a delightful cornerstone of the show, and their continued journey felt like a natural progression.

Eric Stonestreet, known for his role in “Modern Family,” expressed during an interview with Graham Bensinger (through Entertainment Weekly) that he found it a bit painful when ABC declined a proposed spinoff series. This potential sequel would’ve focused on the lives of Cameron (Stonestreet), Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), and their daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons), as they relocated to Missouri so that Cameron could pursue his dream as a college football coach. The spinoff had the support of one of the original creators of “Modern Family,” Chris Lloyd.

Stonestreet expressed that the cancelled sequel series is no longer a possibility. “They had their opportunity,” he stated. Chris Lloyd and a few writers wrote an excellent script focusing on Jesse and I in Missouri, but they declined. They simply said, ‘We don’t want to proceed with it.’

As a passionate movie critic, I can’t help but express my affection for the character I portrayed, the captivating series, and the remarkable Jesse. Our on-set camaraderie was exceptional, our chemistry was electric. It seemed to me that perhaps they viewed us as the seasoned actors, or maybe something along those lines, that didn’t appear significant enough to maintain our characters’ storylines. It stung a bit, but at the end of the day, people make business decisions.

Over the course of eleven seasons, Ty Burrell portrayed Cameron Tucker in the sitcom “Modern Family,” which was broadcast on ABC from 2009 to 2020, spanning 250 episodes. During this period, he received three Emmy Award nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series, emerging victorious on two occasions.

Stonestreet believes the canceled Cameron-Mitch spinoff would undoubtedly have thrived. He strongly feels that it wouldn’t have failed because the creator, who had consistently made the original show excellent, was eager to work on it. With the right individuals involved, it would have been a hit. If ABC had agreed to produce it, I believe we would be watching it now.

Stonestreet emphasized that the opportunity to produce the spinoff is no longer available due to the passage of time, yet he remains eager to collaborate with his “Modern Family” fellow actors again. He also expressed a desire for a festive special, such as a Christmas episode.
