The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom Features Franchise's First Female Director

As a fan who has been following the Legend of Zelda series for decades, I can confidently say that Tomomi Sano’s appointment as the first female director is a groundbreaking moment in gaming history. Her journey with Nintendo, starting from collaborating on various Zelda remakes with Grezzo, has culminated in this monumental achievement.

It’s likely that you’re not familiar with Tomomi Sano yet, but she’s making history as the first female director for the Zelda series at Nintendo. Her upcoming project, “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” is set to release soon.

In a fresh installment of ‘Ask the Developer’, Nintendo disclosed that Sano is one of their team members from the Entertainment Planning and Development Department, specifically Production Group 3. Notably, she has worked with Grezzo on several Zelda remakes such as Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora’s Mask 3D, and Link’s Awakening. This is the first official confirmation that Grezzo is developing the new exclusive game for Nintendo Switch.

Beyond that, Nintendo and Grezzo unveiled the backstory of how Zelda: Whispers of Wisdom developed. In essence, it seems as though the project initially appeared to be a Zelda-themed creation tool, much like the Super Mario Maker series, but with an emphasis on designing and sharing dungeons instead. Satoshi Terada from Grezzo, who jointly directed the game with Sano, spoke about their chance to develop a new installment in the Zelda series and the various concepts they considered.

Terada explained that we were experimenting with multiple methods to play the game simultaneously. In one of these methods, Link has the ability to duplicate and move items like doors and candles, thereby crafting unique dungeons. During this experimental stage, this concept was referred to as an “edit dungeon” since players could essentially design their own Legend of Zelda gaming experience.

Eiji Aonuma, producer of Zelda, mentioned that while it’s enjoyable to design your own dungeon and let others play it, what truly caught his attention was the act of duplicating and reusing items. This aspect significantly impacted the gameplay, as it transitioned from creating dungeons previously, to utilizing copied-and-pasted items as tools to progress in your personal journey within the game.

This resulted in Sano referring to Aonuma overturning the tea set, a term often linked to Shigeru Miyamoto. However, she supported Aonuma’s change, stating: “Indeed, designing dungeons was enjoyable, but having the ability to duplicate items and use them in various locations brought even more enjoyment.

Just recently, there seems to have been an unauthorized release of the ROM for Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. With its official launch slated for this coming Thursday, September 26th, it’s essential to steer clear of potential spoilers floating around online.
