YouTube hikes up Premium price after introducing pause screen ads

As a long-time gamer who has been relying on YouTube Premium for ad-free gaming content and background music while streaming or playing, I find myself at a crossroads with this latest price hike announcement. It’s not just about the money; it’s about the principle of consistency in service pricing across regions.

YouTube is increasing the cost of its Premium subscriptions in regions outside the United States, affecting both individual and family membership options.

YouTube Premium has raised its prices on various occasions since 2022. Most recently, there was a substantial price increase in the U.S. in July 2023, with another significant hike for international users in November of the same year.

Currently, YouTube has announced an increase in subscription fees for users residing outside of the United States, effective shortly after one year from the previous adjustment.

On September 21st, numerous Reddit users shared posts about a surprising rise in the cost of their Premium subscriptions, with certain individuals encountering an uptick as high as 50%. It’s been communicated that these revised charges will become effective starting from November.

In simple terms, the price hike for YouTube Premium affects both individual and family subscription plans. Beginning in November, the cost of YouTube’s Family Plan will be €26 across Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy – a €8 increase from its current price of €18. Simultaneously, the individual plan will see a rise of €2 to €14 in these countries.

In Switzerland and Sweden, the family subscription rates for a service are going up. The family plan cost in Switzerland is rising from 24 Swiss Francs to 34 Swiss Francs, while in Sweden, it’s increasing from 179 Swedish Krona to 279 Swedish Krona. For individuals, the price will also be going up; in Switzerland, it will now be 18 Swiss Francs (previously 16 CHF), and in Sweden, it will cost 189 Swedish Krona (previously 177 SEK).

If you’ve signed up for YouTube via the Apple App Store on your iOS device, you might observe a more significant price rise effective from the November billing period onwards.

This increase in price corresponds with YouTube’s endeavors to roll out fresh advertising approaches for standard users. Following the debut of non-skippable ads on smart TVs last year, the company declared on September 19 their intention to implement pause-screen ads, which will appear when you halt a video.
