As a long-time follower of Shirley Curry, also known as Skyrim Grandma, I must say that her decision to retire from creating Skyrim gameplay videos is bittersweet. On one hand, it’s sad to see such an iconic figure in the gaming world hang up her controller and step away from something she clearly loved doing.
In this digital era, it’s not hard for many individuals to shine through social media, but only a select few have garnered the global influence of Shirley Curry, affectionately known as Skyrim Grandma. At 88 years old, Curry might just be the oldest video game streamer worldwide. With a staggering 1.29 million subscribers on her YouTube channel, she’s truly a phenomenon. However, after nearly a decade of creating Skyrim gameplay videos, Curry is bidding farewell to this aspect of her life.
As a devoted fan, I must share that Curry recently unveiled her decision in a freshly released video. In this heartfelt message, she articulated the reasons behind her stepping away from gaming. “I’m merely playing for the joy of it, but it’s lost its charm,” she expressed. “I’m drained by it. I’m weary of it. I’ve reached a point where I can barely stand it anymore. Consequently, I am making this decision with absolute finality – I won’t be creating or sharing any more game videos.
Although Curry has decided to halt Skyrim video production, she’s not planning to abandon YouTube completely. Instead, she intends to keep sharing videos about books she’s reading, a quilt project she’s taking on, and possibly a book that she might write in the future. Given her reduced posting frequency in 2020 due to her discontent with certain negative comments and a focus on personal well-being, this shift may not come as a shock.
Regardless, Curry’s Skyrim fandom earned her admirers all over the world, including inside Bethesda. In 2019, Bethesda revealed that Curry had lent her likeness to the company and may be featured as a NPC in The Elder Scrolls VI. If that happens, Curry’s legacy in Skyrim will live on beyond her videos.
