The storyline of Peacemaker Season 2 might have a bigger impact on the DCU than initially thought. Reports indicated James Gunn created the show to connect Superman with the forthcoming “Man of Tomorrow” film. But now, it seems Gunn could also be incorporating a significant piece of DC Comics history into the DCU.
The plot of Peacemaker Season 2 revolves around a place called the Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC). Initially, Auggie Smith used it as a kind of storage room and workspace that could reach into other dimensions. But his son, Christopher, later realized that the doorways inside the QUC could actually transport people to different versions of Earth.
Initially, this appeared very similar to Lex Luthor’s Pocket Universe from Superman. But Season 2 of Peacemaker showed some key distinctions. The most notable difference was that the alien device used to enter the QUC was portable. Furthermore, the portals it created could open through any doorway. Sydney Happersen also confirmed that the QUC portals were more stable than the gateways to the Pocket Universe. Despite all of this, a crucial question remained unanswered: who created the QUC and the technology to reach it?
Peacemaker portal generator may be New Gods technology
There’s a theory that the alien technology Peacemaker used to connect with the QUC was made by the New Gods. These powerful aliens, created by Jack Kirby, are part of the DC Comics universe. They come from the Fourth World, a dimension outside of our own, and live on two separate planets. New Genesis is a peaceful world governed by the kind Highfather. Opposing him is Darkseid, the cruel ruler of Apokolips and the leader of the evil New Gods.
As a critic, I’ve been diving into the lore of the New Gods, and one thing really stands out: their reliance on these incredible devices called Mother Boxes. Essentially, they’re sentient computers – and incredibly powerful ones at that. These things aren’t just tools; they help the New Gods shape the universe around them. We actually see one of these Mother Boxes in action, being the catalyst for Victor Stone’s transformation into Cyborg. But their most iconic power? That’s gotta be the creation of Boom Tubes. Imagine portals that can take the New Gods anywhere in space and time – that’s what we’re talking about here. It’s a truly mind-bending concept!
As a follower of Peacemaker, I’ve noticed the device used to access the QUC works a lot like a Mother Box. When it opens a portal, there’s this huge burst of energy, followed by a small sonic boom. It’s interesting because Boom Tubes don’t *need* a doorway to open up, but I don’t think that’s just a coincidence. It feels connected, like there’s something more going on with how these portals work. It’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
New Gods connection could explain Peacemaker’s helmets
The fact that the alien device is based on New God technology might explain something else strange: how Auggie Smith managed to build so many unique helmets for his son. While Peacemaker Season 1 didn’t share much about Auggie Smith’s past, he didn’t appear to have the smarts or technical skills needed to create weapons that sophisticated. It’s a real mystery how he did it.
In Peacemaker Season 2, Christopher Smith revealed some details about his father. While talking with Leota about the QUC, he mentioned that Auggie didn’t finish high school. Chris explained that how Auggie crafted his son’s helmets was “complicated” when questioned. However, this seems to make sense if we consider that the alien technology Auggie Smith obtained from a deceased alien is actually a Mother Box.
Mother Boxes hold the collective wisdom of the New Gods. They can also *create* objects by converting surrounding energy into physical materials. This ability might explain how Auggie Smith gained the knowledge and materials necessary to build his White Dragon armor and the helmets for his son. Furthermore, many comic book readers have observed that the design of the Peacemaker helmet shares similarities with the helmet worn by the New God Orion.
I have to admit, this theory doesn’t quite hold water for me. The biggest problem is that the alien tech just doesn’t *look* like the Mother Boxes from the comics. Plus, the alien Auggie Smith took out wasn’t a New God at all. I guess it’s *possible* the tech was stolen or was some kind of cheap imitation, but honestly, that feels pretty far-fetched to me.
Even if this device isn’t a Mother Box, it could still broaden the scope of the DC Universe. ARGUS wrongly using the portal generator could be the beginning of the Man of Tomorrow storyline. Or, the presence of stolen alien technology on Earth is precisely the kind of thing that could launch the Lanterns story.
