As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating through various digital landscapes, I must say that my encounter with God of War: Ragnarok on PC has been a rollercoaster ride, to put it mildly. The game’s Nordic mythology-infused world is nothing short of breathtaking, yet the technical hurdles one encounters along the way are as unwelcoming as the icy winds of the realms Kratos traverses.
In the final stretch of Kratos’ epic Norse journey in God of War: Ragnarok, our hero faces anything but an effortless ride… and PC users have only just begun to enjoy this PlayStation-exclusive title that was recently brought to their platforms, albeit not without a hitch. While the transition might have been a blessing, the execution leaves much to be desired, as it’s plagued with numerous technical issues like audio glitches, performance problems, controller malfunctions, camera mishaps, and mandatory PSN requirements that can lead to additional snags.
Fix for black screen in GoW Ragnarok
In contrast to the 2018 God of War story featuring Kratos in the northern realms, Ragnarok’s release has not been universally well-received, particularly on PC. Many of the negative reviews highlight the PSN account requirement, a point that appears to have validity as there is an issue directly linked to this service, often resulting in a frustrating black screen. Here are some suggestions for resolving the problem:
- Go to saved games location. By default, it should be in C:\Users\[your_username]\Saved Game\God of War Ragnarok\6144 and locate a file named “userpreferences”. You can remove it, but to be safe we recommend renaming it, just in case. Now, launch the game once more. This time it should allow you to adjust brightness settings and sound. Proceed with the configuration and select “Limited” data option. This should solve the issue.
- Alternatively, some players are pointing out that this is related to PSN not loading correctly in GoW Ragnarok. To solve it, you require another PC game using PSN (like Ghost of Tsushima or Marvel’s Spider-Man). Launch it and configure your PSN account there. It should be now linked to your Steam profile. After launching Ragnarok, there will still be a black screen, but this time wait a bit longer and it should take you further into the game, after automatically logging you to PSN.
- Lastly, there are reports stating that launching the game as administrator works. Despite having small chances of success, it is still worth trying.
Even though the game doesn’t use Denuvo protection, it still encounters its own set of difficulties. Here’s hoping that Jetpack Interactive, the developers behind this version, will swiftly provide updates to address the game’s issues.
